TOKAI BURNING

I Have been told that Tokai is basically burnt to a crisp.  Even the manor house and ticket office are burnt down. Anyone have any news on that state of Tokai forest.  Or is it basically an ashtray? :(  :(

This was on the trail & tar FB page via friends of Tokai.

FYI

Hi All
Sorry for the misinformation I forwarded earlier: I thought my source was reliable.
I have been onsite and the Owlhouse has been razed.
No other building is affected at all. The cottages were adequately protected by their lawns and basic fire safety measures (and the teams on standby). Sandra’s offices and The Tokai Manor are totally unaffected – although the thatch is rather wet from the teams that were protecting them.
Sandras offices and the cottages were in the thick of the fire, but it did not get to the Manor House (closest about 100m away).
No buildings in the Arboretum are affected: all the pulling we did of the aliens was a waste of time: the fire sorted them all out. But very few of the big trees are affected: the fire went through beneath them and most are fire-adapted anyway. A few dead standing trees are burning and all the old dead lying wood is nearly burned up. The fence around the arboretum has had most of its poles burned off to 0.5m – in a few places the entire poles have been consumed: so the fire was effectively below 1m through the Arboretum and plantations
All the pines are affected: a ground fire for the most part with no crown fire – so the pines have survived burning in the fire, but will probably die from the heat anyway. If true the area will have to be closed for recreation for a few years until the trees are removed and the restoration stabilized.
Chatted to Paddy and Gavin – met them on site - and they confirmed what I saw about the infrastructure.

I will put some pics up on the FoTP facebook site later.

False info. Manor house and ticket office are fully intact. Just one of the holiday cottages that were gutted (Owl Cottage)

Upper levels were also affected but it's mostly tree and brush damage.

Lots of damage to the trees though.

Dh0, 1, cobra Mamba boomslang boulders and other areas without trails were affected.

But the manor house is DEFINITELY intact.

Tokai closed for a few years, sounds a bit crazy, hope this isnt even remotely true, and just after I renewed my activity permit

Renewed mine 1st Feb. ..

Eina.

The only reason I didn't was because I haven't had a chance yet. I was planning to go there this afternoon (my short day at work). So, I promise, it wasn't a premonition.

Had one of my best Tokai sessions ever last week... Boulders, boomslang, DH, vasbyt. Sweet memories... Oh boy. Will miss the missus! [tears]

Like my dad said, nothing on earth lasts forever, only heaven is eternal.

Let's hope Tokai returns to its former glory!
