Cape Winelands MTB Encounter

At the moment I worry that MTBing will become an elitist sport.  Already more races have entry fees close to the R300 mark.  If you have a family of 4 that all want to race, it makes a mighty dent in your wallet, such that you can only afford to do one race per month.

Events like these will just cement that thought in the heads of more race organisers.

And yet most races are sold out or close to max entries. So I dont think it will become an elitist sport, its allready halfway there. Unfortunately.

My girlfriend and I did basicly every single race on the Western Cape calendar last year. This year we doing only the best ones, and we are going to save our race fees and go away more often to awsome trails all over the country.

And there you have it...

The bubble will eventually burst.  There will be a tipping point where consumers decide they are not getting value for money and at that point only subscribe to the best events in terms of route and/or price.

While the big events will still be oversubscribed because of this, smaller/newer events will have to be be more competitive in terms of what they offer and their pricing.

But don't hold your breath - I think we are a year or two away from that yet.

Interesting one, I think the increase in prices are driven by the huge growth in participation in the sport, not sure how that makes the sport more elitist as it is not just rich people taking up sport - but given that mtb'ing is expensive whether you do races or not it will always have an element of elitism.

Not sure why you say there is a bubble, there are a number of reasonably priced events out there already -  it is "relatively" easy to host an event, we see new events every year & as well as badly supported ones dropping off the calendar - so the competition for participants money are strong!

HI Guys, in fairness, and to balance some of the comments made a little, have a look at the official entry site to see which packages are available and also what is included in each of those packages (premier package at R27900 includes 5 star hotels, meals, clothing for every day, eyewear, helmet, bike bags, etc etc while the normal package (R4k) still includes all daily meals, one set of event clothing - bib and jersey, etc).  Entrants are free to choose which option they want to go for.  But this is all besides the point - a huge amount of work has gone into the trails and rider experience side of the event which will ultimately be the true test:

We think the event offers really good value.  With only 100 riders this year the idea is to really spend a lot of time with participants to get feedback, suggestions, ideas, etc before we scale the event in 2016.

Hope to see some of you there!

Yip, absolutely right. More and more events now have VIP areas after the race for the fat bankers to have a beer and meal afterwards. While us normal okes get a warm coke, and a dent in our wallets.

I find booze and women to be very underated.
