Hi all,

I have been offered a Merida 96 1000 26" tubeless with uprated Manitou fork and extras. Bike looks in good condition and comes with a lot of extras - helmet, shoes, clothes (too small for me), camel backpack and other bits and pieces.

What would a fair price be and is this a good starter bike?

Please guys, let me have your thoughts asap - need to decide today

Thx

J

We sold 2 x Merida 3000D 96 about two years ago - they were both used but in good condition - the one went for R6000 and the other for R10000.  I doubt you should be paying more than around R4000 to R5000 for a 1000D.  I'm thinking closer to R4000

Be careful not to let the extras up your price too much, you're after the bike after all.

Thanks all,

So, R 11,500 is way too high then?

Can anyone offer other suggestions for around the R10k mark for a duel suspension 26" medium.

In the classifieds I have seen a Stump Jumper, Merida or Scott for around R 10K

Any suggestions?

Do your homework if you are buying a DS second hand, services on shocks can be pricey as can replacing pivot bearings in the frame and bushes etc for the shock (my RP23 replacement bushing was R260, lucky my Trance has only one! Full bearing replacement is around R1500 onwards and full service on a RP23 is about R1000, replaced the seals on my F32 Fox fork, that was R400 DIY). I look after my bike but it is a mountain bike after all and parts wear out. Remember as well a shock pump is also around R300-400 and you will certainly need one.

It's going to a degree depend on intended use - gravel road rides, downhill madness, trail riding, a mixed bag of riding etc.

Any second hand bike will cost you sooner or later, its the same as a second hand car. If you want the bike for FUN casual riding then no probs and if the previous owner did a good job at taking care of it then even better.
