snip.snip...

You can not expect a R3 000 bike to perform or be anything like a R40 000 bike.

snip snip...

You asked for an entry level bike, you got an entry level bike.

snip snip...

All I can add to this is "exactly".

I see that on the 16th January you bought an entry-level secondhand 26" Mongoose for R3500.

On 2 March you got as much as R10 000 from your insurance company because your Mongoose got stolen.

I hope you and I are not in the same risk pool with your underwriter.

I think you have taken your insurance company for more than enough to cover the "loss" your wife has suffered on her Axis. True the wheels and learn to set the gears yourself.

Hi Guys,

Signed up today and 1st forum aswell.

Like the topic states, i bought a 2nd hand Mongoose Amasa and was wondering if you will be able to help me with the following questions??

1. Does anyone know anything about this bike?? Bought it at Cash Crusaders for R3500 and it does not even have a scratch on it.

Hi Guys,

Mtb got stollen last week, 2006 black Mongoose Amasa Comp.

Anyways, no use crying over spilt milk.

Insurance going to cover me for my losses @ max value of 10K.

Got 2 quotes, 1 is for a silverback sola 4 and the other for a GT karakoram

Did you report this to the SAPS?  Insurance fraud is a serious offence.

Yes, bikes have to be maintained and you get what you pay for, no issue with that.

but if the shop dude said the bike is good enough for Meerendal and when OP takes it back and then get told it is only suitable for gravel roads, I'm sorry I got a problem with that. Then shop dude should have first up said stick to gravel roads. Obviously there are 3 sides to a story.Yes, you can buckle a wheel going down a pavement etc. My issue is that at point of sale there was misinformation shared.

Having said that, OP, do your homework regardless. When you upgrade, approach it as if you might not get all the information from a salesman. Google or just ask the Hub next time.

Thanks to some of you for the info....the rest of you, no names...i am disappointed in. Im asking for help and then i get accused for taking my insurance for a ride...fraud like some call it. I am truly put off from posting something on the hub again. Yes, i have the case number for you, if it makes you sleep at night. Im glad to see how closely knit this "family" is.

We had a budget for her bike and said what we wanted to use the bike for. The budget did not make it to the "better bike" range and then he showed us the Axis. "Don't worry, this is a good entry level mtb. It will handle all the trails as beginner rider. Now when we go back, oh now, its only meant for gravel and roads. Why didn't he just say listen....rather save up and come in a month. Meaning that this was only a sale and nothing else....oh well. Went with my buddy to my lbs, had cash in hand and the sales guy said, rather save up and get the better bike. He did exactly that, got the better bike and now he's like a happy pig in ****.

My mate has a Axis as well. After every ride at Bottelary he had to straighten the wheels. It is best suited as a schoolbike riden on tar roads. By a placid child. Fix it and sell it. Buy a good 2nd hand bike. I bought a Scott scale 40 (2007) with good xt parts on rode it for years before having problems.

Bought the scott for R4500, which is same as you probably paid. All bikes depreciate fairly fast. Even good bikes. You dont need to fork out 40k or 20 or even 10. There are great bikes in the 4-8k range. Just a bit older.

My first bike I used when I startes riding in 2013 was a steel rigid bike.

first fall - buckled the wheel. First time out on a proper trail - shifters broke. In my case it was a case of - you get what you pay for.

Calling this incident a scam is IMO unfair to the bike shop.

Well, we looked around for 2nd hand bikes, thats how i bought mine. She had the option of going 2nd hand or choosing a new bike that, "can also do the job". Guess the best thing is to fix the bike and sell it, or fix it and save up for a new one/decent 2nd hand one.

Im glad to see how closely knit this "family" is.

As a family we look out for each other.

Every time an old, obsolete bicycle magically triples in value whilst standing in a garage for 6 weeks, it affects every one in the risk pool.

Seems like someone is grumpy for his insurance company or some other reason.

I don't even need to explain myself to you as this is a totally different thread.

Give me advice, if not please keep your cocky comments to yourself.
