I hear it has round 950m of ascending, is that correct?

Elevation gain is around 1,000m to 1,100m ascending (my Garmin results for the course vary in that range).

Elevation loss is around 1,650 to 1,750m descending, which means a net altitude loss of around 650m.

It might look like an easy course on paper, but it's actually a real challenge. Especially the section that runs from Cato Ridge through Inchanga, Drummond and Bothas Hill.

My favourite race of the year, for sure. It really is a brilliant course. Love it.

Fox hill gets me every time. The focus of my training this entire year is quite simple. Get to the top of Fox hill and turn left with the bunch.

Two years ago I broke the cable to my rear dérailleur at the top of Fox hill and did the rest of the race in my 11. A lot of uphills I soon discovered.

The route makes for an awesome event. (5 completed). Don't expect much from the organizers. Goodie bag has a w/bottle and nothing else. Absolutely nothing. Cold legs straight into a 15km climb. Of the 4 water points along the way, 2 ran out of water before half the field passed in 2014. It is the oldest race in SA and so are the owners. It could be one the very best had it not been for Stale-Management. Last year saw a very technical finish next to Suncoast Casino. Kite was also placed 1.4 km from finish. Get your driver to park inside Suncoast very early as it gets full quickly. There is also only one exit out of the complex. Bring a dozen cold beers to enjoy whilst leaving the parking area. If you do not consume alcohol, I suggest you get settled in snug with into your latest You magazine whilst leaving the parking area. You need the BS from that magazine to tolerate the Exit BS.

I think that's all that needs to be said.

BTW, there are other events that are older than this one.

Ja, Fox hill is a real selector so early on. A pretty gentle climb when you're out training, but on race day everyone is fresh and nervous and eager, so the pace up to the top is murderous. 'A' batch took a little under 18 minutes for the climb @ 25 - 26 km/h. So I guess your training will be to do similar 18 - 20 min hard intervals in a big gear.

If I remember right, you used to cycle down from JHB for the race?

Yes I did that three or four times. Not this year.

As to the training that is exactly it. Just finished my base and starting with 20 min intervals on the trainer. Do two with a twenty minute recovery. Almost chucked my cookies last week. Panorama in April but quite honestly if I can hang on up Fox hill I will be happy with my year. Clearly I'm not so good at this but hell I try
