Folks, stop worrying about Fox hill, really. It's a non-issue. I repeat, it's a gradual, gentle climb and only kicks up a bit at the end. Yes it does hurt in the racing bunches because of the speed the okes go up, but for everyone else going up at their own pace it's a doddle. What you should be more concerned about is the section starting from Inchanga and ending with the last climb on the M13 (before you drop down Fields Hill). That's where The Man With The Hammer lives - you'll get to meet him there.

Exactly, still fresh at the start so it's usually not that bad and also not that steep (It can't be compared to the Suikerbosrand climb), just try and stick with the group... Tombeej I see you've made mention of a bad road section somewhere between Fox and Inchanga.  I'm more concerned about the section from Inchanga on wards (Where the man with the hammer lives), anything major on that piece? Especially on those twisty downhills?

The Inchanga section onwards has very good road surfaces. You can really bomb down those descents with full confidence. But before that, that stretch from the top of Fox hill to Camperdown really has deteriorated. It will be a bad idea to just blindly follow the wheel in front of you along that section. I fear there'll be accidents on Sunday in the early bunches, who will be racing fast and close.

well I think I am going to ride my own pace, but it the winds blows then I am going to have to hold on to whatever bunch I can.

I just like to get a feel for things so I know where to use and save energy. Being on a bike for just about a year now, so I still have to learn and understand my body when it comes to pushing hard for these distances.

your posts are always informative, and thanks again for all the pointers and advice !

anyone know where I can check/confirm entry and batching ? Seems a little gremin crept into the email I was supposed to be sent

Confirm in what way? I received an email (weeks ago) and sms (yesterday), both with identical info.

Easiest way to confirm your entry would be to go to the racetec page and see if the event is listed under your name. As far as batching goes, if you havent received the email or sms yet, just wait for registration. Everyone likes a good surprise :D

I recall reading the post a few pages back...in summary what was the planned ride?

We'll do about 45 km in total (equivalent of your intended 60 km flat ride), but it covers an important section that you'll be glad you had a chance to look at before race day (it's the 50 - 75 km section of the race when you really start to feel it).

Yes it's hilly, but more like rolling hills. Easy stuff.

Like I say, I don't like riding at all before a race, so I'm only offering to act as tour guide to have a chance to meet you guys for the first time, help with a few pointers on my home course, and to enjoy a really social chilled morning on the bike with coffee afterwards.

I would only take it extremely slowly... "smell the roses" pace. We can stop along the route and view sites of the valley, etc., just spin the pedals in the easiest gear, soak up some suns rays and enjoy the morning.

Thanks hayleyearth - sounds great.

I assume this will be heading out from the Suncoast parking lot on Saturday morning? Starting at 05:30?

Oh crap, thought that post was the one with all the info ...sorry...

I'd be very keen for a chilled Saturday ride with Hubbers   .

But my suggestion would be to start from Oscars in Hillcrest, ride backwards along the route towards PMB, then turn around and come back through Inchanga-Drummon-Bothas Hill. It's a very pretty ride, but also a great way for first timers to get a proper look at this section before the race. It will help a lot for mental preparation.

Back at Oscars we can then have a nice brekkie (the most popular eatery for cyclists in Hillcrest, it's often packed with roadies and mountain bikers every Saturday and Sunday morning for breakfast).

This is the 2nd last 'big' climb, about 67/68km in. There is downhill after it and a another climb of similar length.

You come past Kearsney Boys's High, down Bothas Hill and turn right into Kassier Road and continue to the bottom where one climbs up to the newish Hillcrest Hospital and then you turn left onto the M13, down the hill and then up this. These are the three hills that can surprise and you'll want to be part of the bunch after these 3 little climbs so it's a time to hang tough.

ja, there is new tar from Hillcrest through to kloof. if it hasn't been fixed (last rode it 6 weeks ago) there is a pothole towards the bottom of the straight section down fields hill so try and be in the right hand lane. doesn't look too bad but have had two mates blow tyres and one cracked his rim.
