Any one else think they are starting the groups quite late?

Is that to give the people time to drive into pmb from durban etc the morning?

I agree with you Hayley.they are quite late and the slower riders are going to battle with the heat.

Shova runs 2 shorter distances on the same route,I expect this is to give those (often social and first timers) riders time to finish before the elite's and the rest of us come through.

Correct, the main reason is for the folks starting off further down the course for the 65 km and 35 km races to get away before the elites get going from PMB. Those shorter races start off very early.

But also (as Hayley says) the later times really do help people get themselves to PMB in time for their batch starts. Some folks like to stay over at PMB then have their spouses drive through to DBN. But many more folk will prefer to leave their cars in DBN and either take the race shuttle to the start or their families have had to get out of bed early to drive them up to PMB. If we started as early as the 94.7 does, it will mean a 3 am wake up call for some folks.

Besides the heat is the omnipresent wind. The prevailing winds for summer are NE, which means if it's warm and sunny there will be a head wind for pretty much the whole race. Early mornings are relatively still, but then the NE starts to ratchet up during the day as the land gets warmer compared to the cooler sea. On the other hand, if there's a cold front rolling through then that means a SW'er, which means R-L cross tail winds and cooler weather.

But the last couple of years have given us lovely weather to ride in (both benign SW cold fronts).

AL for me.

I am now starting to buzz with anticipation. This is my favourite race of the year, bar none.

There is always something different and special about racing point to point. I always feel like it's more like I'm going on an adventure, with my destination somewhere in the far distance (not back where I started).

For those who have not done this race before, you are going to love the Shova. The ride through the Inchanga, Drummond, Bothas Hill section and the drop down from Kloof is my favourite stretch. There's so much history about that road (being the Comrades route as well). And then finishing on the beachfront with soft serve ice cream cones and a swim in the sea waiting for you at the end. Nothing better than getting your cycling kit off, getting straight into your cossie and running down the beach and into the sea right after the finish :).

Lastly, please please can we not have any complaints about what you did or didn't get in your goodie bag, or how disappointing the expo might be for you. Really, is that what you entered this race for?

You've got full road closure with excellent marsalling, newly paved road surfaces that are just brilliant, spectacular scenery and an unforgettable adventure along a famous road between two grand old KZN cities.

It's a special race. Soak up the atmosphere and just enjoy it  .

So are most of you saying In Dirtbin the night before or in PMB?

Anyone keen to go for a +- 60km gentle ride the Saturday morning? (I dont know the 'safe' routes so need to join a few people)
