Depressed after exercise

Recommended Posts

It is called hormones and the associated effect exercise has on it.............it is a neurochemical process.

To counteract its effects.................only one prescription............the end prize after a good or bad ride...............BEER!!!!

Even the Proteas apply this principle.

Just after exercise or do you feel "down"on other days as well? If at other times as well then you need to think about clinical depression.

If just after exercise think about your blood glucose (sugar) level -  try ensure proper nutrition after riding. This would make sense why it is worse after races rather than regular training.

i  would agree here.  lately i have been feeling sh!ty as well.

not sleeping well and work is playing a role i guess.

what makes it worse is when i do ride and the watts are not met , jeeeees then its crap.

i think i will be going back to enjoying the ride more when i do go ride and not getting too caught up in the numbers.

I tend to crash about 1/2 an hour to an hour after a hard ride and feel exhausted which in turns makes me miserable, irritable and grumpy.

However after doing Xterra I had a rehydrate and felt fine the rest of the day.  This sparked me to do some research on dehydration symptoms  (other than the obvious thirst and headache) and realised that most of the time I was probably slightly dehydrated as it can cause mood swings, irritability etc.

Feeling depressed can be due to many things.  An interesting read below on other possibilities.  As others have mentioned, see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

I don't know if I am alone in this, but after a ride/run I feel great for about half an hour then get very depressed. This is worst after a race, I feel on top of the world and very "euphoric" and then bam, I feel horrible. I feel like I want to start crying. Has anyone experienced this?

Do you use any supplements?

Are any of them heavy caffeine based formulas?

Try and not use any supplements and see how you feel afterwards.

Try use 32gi from Dischem and see if you still get the very depressed feeling after training.

I do get the same depression thing alot of the times but only after 6+ hours on the saddle.

Changing from extreme caffine supplements to caffine free has helped me, though i keep some caffine supps as back up..CAUSE THEY WORK!

If i feel that depressed feeling after training i have a monster protein shake and a cold shower.

Try buy some Gaba @ R189 for 120 capsules from Dischem and take 2-3 tablets before you go to bed.

It helps me.

What Drugs??

Get medical advice from a Dr.

I need to go see mine.  Thought popped into my head last week to just take the motorbike and see what will win.  Me or the pillar of a bridge.

Overtrained?

Underrested?

Depleted?

If yes, consider this

Try Zzzzz, calcium and magnesium and electrolytes too. Iron too.

Also take a mental break often from the saddle.

Keep strong friend. Ask for full blood test, including hormones (specifically related to thyroid).

Find your "pause" button.......and how to recharge your batteries. Vasbyt!

The only time I am depressed after a ride is when I did not make my target time in a race.

Which happens often.

No , no medical advice , just weed and coke

What type of coke?

Jokes aside - the "other" type of coke is really good at making you really depressed (not my peronal experience - but I have seen what it does to other people).

I have a history of chronic depression, and have used so many pharmaceuticals to overcome it. In my case, it's a chemical thing - a shortage of seratonin and dopamine.

I have found that I need the seratonin pharmaceuticals, but that if I exercise 5 to 7 hours a week, the dopamine drugs just make me aggressive and impatient - exercise actually helps the dopamine levels. If I drop the exercise, I need the dopamine drugs.

Just my experience and I am not a doctor, but I would imagine that it might be your blood sugar or hydration levels.

There is a great article in one of the recent Velo magazine editions on cycling and depression.

If you don't come right after reassessing your sugar and hydration levels, maybe see a doctor (and not just a GP - see a proper psychiatrist).

Not quite the same as what you are describing, but I went through a (long) phase of using exercise to escape my unhappy life & here's the thing - if you asked me about my life then I would've told you it was awesome. I honestly didn't know I was unhappy.

BUT the only time I felt really happy was when I was exercising.

I didnt have that crushing unhappiness that you describe, but its worth considering that maybe life off the bike is what's bringing you down? Although such a sharp drop in mood does indicate something else.

Good luck & let us know what you figure out - dont just leave it though.

Dont put it off (the doc not the bike/pillar).
