If you are swimming a lot and want to measure it properly then the tomtom multisport and garmin swim are quite decent. They measure strokes and distances.

I battled to find just a basic stopwatch that I liked for a while though so not sure where to look.

I found using the Garmin Swim helped me focus on the swimming. Instead of just going length after length with no understanding of what I was doing, I suddenly could see the improvements. Very motivational.

Garmin Swim is very easy to use.

Also looks pretty decent. I use it as my everyday watch.

I use the TomTOm multisport, good ,functional, affordable.... can use it for pool swimming where it counts the laps and open water swimming where you use the freestyle option which utilizes GPS.... I have found it to not be 100% accurate regarding distance though and I can only think its due ot the arm movement being counted as movement too(if that makes sense)

Not sure how accurate the garmins are. My TomTom over reads by about 20% using the freestyle option

has a stop watch function too...and can be used on the bike, running etc.

i use a Garmin 910XT, has both pool and open water function.  In the pool can count laps, time and swim strokes etc to help improve your technique and speed.

Use exactly the same thing, found on the last sprint that I did using freestyle that it was quite accurate but have not done a longer openwater swim yet. afaik freestyle is just a basic GPS sensor option for the stuff they dont cover and doesnt use the accelerometer.

Learned a trick about it being inaccurate during open water swims...  If you don't mind not seeing the watch, stick it in your swimming cap, much more accurate readings.

Yeah I saw dc rainmaker does the same thing. The GPS signal gets messed up with your arm is underwater.

Excellent idea, did not think of that....my ole man recommended around my ankle but could not think of a way to get the strap long enough...

just a query, is this overreading common to all watches that use gps?

Yes. I have read tons, and I mean tons of Ray's reviews and its the same for all GPS watches in that they lose sync when your arm is underwater and produce erratic results by trying to piece it together.

Some have normalization algorithms to try and smooth it out but none are 100% accurate.

The trick in the swimcap is the most accurate, especially if its positioned around the crown area where its not likely to be under water.

I use the suunto ambit 2.... Awesome watch, and easy toe use.

It counts my laps and when I do speed it automatically sees with distance and gives me time per set.

Another great function is the apps you can download and also write yourself with moves count and it also gives you the best graphs Om your progress after swim.

I'm pretty sure you can still pick up those Casios at GAME.
