Slipped disc in lower back.

Hi guys. I just want to know if there are any of you that recovered from a slipped disc without surgery. I suffered a back spasm about 4 weeks ago. The spasm went away after 2 weeks, but I still had some discomfort. Someone recommend a physiotherapists. About 40 minutes after my session I started to experience intense pain down the back of my left leg and calf. The next morning I could not get out of bed. I've got indescribable pain in the whole of my left leg.i cannot walk or sit and I can only lay on my back. My Doctor said I need urgent surgery. I don't have medical aid so it will have to be done at a State hospital.

Have you had a MRI to confirm diagnoses ? Had a disc prolapse 3 years ago .At the acute stage anybody will take surgery ,but by far the most of disc prolapse  cases will get better within 6 weeks and you will be pain free in the next 6 months with conservative treatment

I am suffering from the same thing herniateed disc I think is the correct term. Think i did doing plyometrics in the gym. Indescribable referred pain into the thigh. Try rest, then Mckenzie exercises (Google it) and conservative physio. I am 4 weeks into it and have started on the indoor trainer very easy half hour sessions. Real pain the butt!

I had a slipped disc in my neck, and surgery was also suggested. My neck and shoulder were in constant spasm, but my physio said I should try and ride it out and use painkillers if required. A second (and third) surgeon consultation suggested I wait at least 8 weeks before making a decision. I'm glad I waited as the prolapse has receded (took 12 weeks and no riding!) and while it can flare up again, it can be managed if I'm careful. That said, slipped discs in the neck are quite a bit different to the lower back.

No one can advise you on the correct choice other than yourself. Good luck and I wish you well and a speedy recover whatever that route may be

Thanks for all the well wishes. I think I will have to get an MRI scan before making a decision. I am self employed so a lengthy recovery will be disastrous.

Please get a proper diagnosis.

My daughter's boyfriend also had a "slipped disk" or "herniated disk" depending on which physio / biokinetisist / Chitopractor he was seeing at the time. All in practice guessing what really was wrong.

He finally went for an MRI scan yesterday and was operated on this morning, one step ahead of the wheel chair.

Sounds exactly like my story!!!! Only mine was about one year ago, and also I'm not your daughters boyfriend! Haha. Anyway....to the OP, rather get it checked out properly. DO NOT PLAY GAMES WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR BACK! :)

I have had a lumbar fusion and a cervical fusion. Prior to my lumbar fusion my left leg was so weak I could not depress the clutch pedal on my car and the pain was incredible, there was nothing my doctor gave me that could deaden that pain.

It was so bad my neurosurgeon (a man I have the highest personal regard for) gave me three choices, he said I can go home and fetch a toothbrush because tomorrow they operate, or I could stay here and book in now because tomorrow they operate, or I could go home and come back at 5 am because tomorrow they operate.

The good news, for me was the pain relief after the operation was almost immediate and although the recovery was fairly long, with care I made a 99.9% recovery, today I run, hike, cycle and in fact apart from rugby and bungee jumping there is nothing I feel I cant tackle.

Good Luck, listen to your medical doctor and I am sure you will be fine.
