Ridiculous Motorists

I must say, I have noticed here in JHB that its the truck drivers that are most patient and give the room that is needed to pass, even though they have the biggest vehicle to move.... Obviously there are exceptions, but I just noticed this lately.

Always a big wave thanks to them, which they seem to appreciate too.

down here, it's the taxis that are in that category. Really really respectful of cyclists.

The ones you have to look out for generally drive X5's, RR's or Fortuners, and have their iPhones glued to their cheeks. Generally found in the vicinity of Tasha's or Melissa's

Agreed, but I must mention the Golden Arrow, MyCity and Jammie Shuttle buses, they outdo everyone for stupid driving.

I was cut off drastically by a car with two bikes on the back and the driver wearing his PPA ride wider than the rider shirt.

Bottom line, people are what they are.

Welcome to the cycling world and don't let narrowness of other minds affect yours.

The "I am a cyclist too" is seen as a right to drive like a knob when around other cyclists. Take a ride in the Cradle, its the driving cyclists that are the idiots, not really the normal motorist/tourists....

I think the shirt just adds to it, "Im a cyclist AND an activist" therefore my room for douchery is even greater. Its that typical human thought train that because I do good, I have a bit of credit and therefore my bads are oker than yours.

When I drive the car with the bike racks on, I am extra vigilant to drive extra carefully around motorcycles and bicycles, not only because I know whats its like to be in their shoes, but also hopefully to show the other cars how grateful they are when you treat them with a bit of caution.

Thats the bit where we can help, show gratitude when a vehicle does give you a gap. Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool :)

If you have ever ridden down Hendrik Potgieter to the Cradle here (bit of a cyclist highway on weekends), you will know to keep well clear of the Taxis, very dangerous!

Slightly off topic, it has always amazed me that people who drive high end vehicles which clearly must have BlueTooth still choose to glue their phones to their ears? I always thought it was a JHB "I am important" thing, but saw in all over CPT recently too.

I have come to the conclusion that they either massively over extended themselves to buy said car and could not afford the BlueTooth option, or that they are simply just too stupid to pair their device with said car.

neither. They just couldn't give a toss. Not prepared to make the effort.

You said it.

Astounds me to see mothers in the yoga pants dropping their kids off as school at 7:30 in the morning unable to remove device from ear to engage with children and say a decent goodbye. Huge values being taught.  I cannot imagine any call that is that important in her life at that time. Unless of course Vida or Melissa's has run out of meia de leite and the world is about to end. Tasha's generally doesn't see this crowd for another 90 minutes.

I don't buy this.  It's a cop out to justify bigotry.

Recreational cyclists (guys in lycra)  make up no more than 10% of cyclists on our roads.  I can't remember when I last encountered a commuter on the roads I use that rode in equally shocking and frightening way. They are just trying to mind their own business and stay alive.

I would hazard a guess too that if I encountered 1 lycra rider a ride riding in a equally shocking and frightening way it would be a lot. I must pass at least 50 lycras on the roads daily, sometimes more.

So on my napkin stats, 1 in 50 is 2%, but I pass hundreds of commuters a day so this equally shocking and frightening way is diluted further into 0.something %.

Hardly justification for driving like a dick.

PS: Funnily enough, I have never had a cyclist, of any type, cause me any issues when I've been prepared to respect their space and #staywider.

Check out the Jozi Hustle video that was posed on the hub before you say it's a "cop out"...

The problem with Mountain biking, is that you have to deal with other mountain bikers ;)

I don't mind that so much. As long as you have patience t it's not so bad.

The patience you need for the obligatory backslapping over how how much better it is than road riding. Also for all the fiddling with gear and all the talk about gear and clothing. Very boring. Then patience on the hills.

Just kidding MTB guys. It's great fun. Really

On the rare occasion I need to be on the road, there have been times when that familiar woosh of air and sudden jolt was caused by a vehicle with the little yellow and red sticker on the left hand side.... Just saying.

On the road I ride with the understanding that some people drive on autopilot, so when I should have right of way I give it up. Drivers are probably daydreaming or need to poop and in a rush to get to a potty, so it's possible they haven't noticed me pedaling along the side of the road.

With that attitude I can't get upset at the car not yielding or speeding up ahead of me just to turn left. Makes my commute so much more pleasant.
