Road Bike Routes from Camps Bay

I'm going to be in Camps Bay next week and will probably bring my road bike along.

Firstly, is road bike the right option? Secondly, if so where's the best route out and back or looping from there? (I don't really know the area too well). And if I get shouted down by the Mtb crew for bringing a road bike, where would I Mtb from there?

It's a family trip so I'm only going to spend a couple of hours in the early morning on the bike, for a couple of days. I just need to keep ticking over.

I do use a Garmin 1000 so if anyone is kind enough to share a route or two it'd be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

There's lovely road riding from Camps Bay to Hout Bay, over Chappies to Noordhoek and on to Cape Point if you like. You're following the coast line to Chappies so it's hard to get lost. Returning via the same route. But it's a busy road so bring your lights and leave real early. Chappies is currently open to vehicles but supposedly closed to walkers and riders, but everyone's walking/running and riding it. Bear in mind, they may decide to close it completely if conditions dictate so that route isn't a 100% sure thing for the time being.

Bring the MTB and you can enjoy jeep track and some single track on the front face of Table Mountain, which is just over the hill from Camps Bay. And even ride on around the side of the mountain to Rhodes Memorial, doing the Epic Prologue route.

There's more scope for road riding right now, if you want to ride from Camps Bay.

Have fun. Ride safe.

Edit: there's also MTB on signal hill/lions head but I'm not intimate with those routes so will leave it to someone else to comment.

If you want to do a nice "safe" ride, you can head out on the dedicated cycle path from the Foreshore all the way out to Koeberg. ±80-90kms round trip and flat.  It is a relatively easy ride from Camps Bay to the Foreshore too.

Just be careful going through Paarden Island.  I would not suggest that alone when it is dark.

Also up the Glen form Camps Bay, across the road up to the cableway, along Tafelberg Road to the end and back, up to top of Signal Hill and back and down Camps Bay Drive back to Camps Bay.  This is a sweet 1 1/2 hour tour on a road bike with some serious hills.

Add in another 1 1/2 ish hours by going to the top of Chappies and back too and then you've got the full CT sights viewing package.

You are allowed to ride Chapmans Peak from Hout Bay up to the lookout point at the top. But the part from the top down to Noordhoek, is closed to riders and walkers due to the likelihood of injury from loose falling rocks. Still, Camps Bay to the top of Chappies and back, makes for a great ride!

Out towards Blouberg along the cycle path is also a great ride, if completely flat. Get the family to meet you in Blouberg for breakfast.

DJR most cyclist cycle through Chappies - seems as if there is no enforcing, the signs are up to cover them.

Cape Point route is safe - as safe as any other route in CT - and much safer traffic wise.

I was up there twice last week and both times there was a guard at the top that indicated for me to stop and turn around. He was friendly, I didn't give him any stick and happily turned back. I know people ignore the very clear signs and just ride through, but I think it is wrong. There are good reasons for the temporary ban on riding the part below the cliffs. After the fire there are just too many loose rocks above. The nets will catch the big ones but smaller ones will get through and can potentially kill a walker or a cyclist. Initially it was completely closed to cyclists, but the PPA managed to negotiate opening the Hout Bay side for us. Personally, I'll stick to that arrangement and I hope everyone will, even if it is inconvenient.
