A few random thoughts:

The legal age for consensual sex is 12 years.

Nobody requires a skills (or knowledge) test before riding a bike on public roads.

Darwin was right.

Momentum = mass x velocity

Many cyclists also own cars.

Ja, so if the guy is commuting, it's not as bad as if the guy was training. One is necessity and the other is indulgence.

As a very regular rider of Rhodes drive, albeit two hours earlier in the day might I suggest you consider a montage of Klaasens, Hohenort, Brommersvlei, Spilhaus, Southern Cross, M41 etc. Less volume in most instances.

But suffice to say, that training on public roads in rush hour traffic is going to expose you to needless risk. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it. It might not be right or perfect but it is reality.

And I suspect that you are just as tired of RIP threads as I am.

I use those regularly as well as Rhodes. I've never had a motorist give me a spot of bother because I own the road through the twisties and give as much room as well as wave motorists by on the straights. Not everyone has the presence of mind or confidence.

I use Rhodes Drive every evening on my drive home, and every evening I am faced with the tubes scenario. Cyclists are a part of the vehicular traffic. I'm just adult enough to grasp that fact and accept that they have as much right to be there whatever time of the day they choose or I choose.

Consideration works both ways, when cycling or when driving. It does not involved selectively ranting when the situation does not work in your favour.

There is NO road in Cape Town when any cyclist is not an inconvenience. Some roads allow the motorist sufficient visibility to pass safely. Much of Rhodes Drive, especially the section from Kirstenbosch to just past Celecia Forest entrance does not and here it is in the cyclist interest and safety to own the road. There is a long uphill drag thereafter and this section allows for safe passing.

telling cyclists to stay off that road is just plain simple wearing the selfish motorist hat because it suits a selfish entitled individual. Cyclists pay fuel tax to use that road and other roads all over the Western Cape. Asking for consideration from motorist is not a selective approach. We have a right to be there and everywhere anytime of the day. If you feel apologetic for being a cyclist then one can make other choices. Cape Town affords one the opportunity to participate in many sports that are lower risk and don't require as much management of one self and others.

Want to cycle at night. Anyone should be allowed to do so safely without incurring the wrath of fellow cyclists when an irresponsible motorist takes them out.

People on this thread are the problem in this sport. No one can stick together for a common cause which is why we always loose. We blame all these entitled "roadies" while Mountain bikers are responsible for more rogue riding and stakeholder management to maintain existing networks.

If Tubehunter was the cyclist then this thread would have a different title Probably something like: "Git Driver drives irresponsibly while passing, will it never change".

So please continue with the name calling. I'm looking forward to the big reveal.

Seriously though you do seem to be playing the man not the ball a lot in this thread.

I'm very un-entitled believe me.

The man painted a scenario in which he participated. HE is calling people exercising their rights to practice their pastime all sort of names so I guess he is playing the people too. Most of all the rider who is not even here to provide his side of the story.

Tried going up from Houtbay in Dec at about lunchtime on a Saterday.Eventually got off the bike and pushed up on the other side of the road.Do not have a death wish.Did it again on Sunday before 8am and traffic was still quiet. The amount of litter was disgusting, broken bottles, plastic bags ,KFC wrappers etc.Houtbay clean up your act!!

As do I. Also never had a spot of bother as I don't keep cars in holding pattern behind me for more than a couple of 100meters at a time. As someone who does ride this road regularly it still completely amazes me that the traffic volume approaching from Hout Bay combined with the uphill gradient towards the Nek, which translates into a very large difference in speed between cyclists and vehicles, seems to escape you.

Yep, but then the volume of traffic leaving Hout Bay is nothing like the volume going back, so cars have far more opportunity to get by. Is this really still too obvious?

Yep, by choosing to cycle this route you are in essence preventing anyone from making a legal overtake during early morning peak traffic, as then the wait is MUCH longer than expected, even for someone who is genuinely pro cycling.

telling cyclists to stay off that road is just plain simple wearing the selfish motorist hat because it suits a selfish entitled individual.

Nope, not telling anyone to wholeheartedly stay off that road, but rather choose your training time better or use an alternative route at that time of the morning, as it is abundantly unsafe when watching motorists driving behind a cyclist along this stretch.

Cyclists pay fuel tax to use that road and other roads all over the Western Cape. Asking for consideration from motorist is not a selective approach.

Wake up dude. Who is saying cyclists should stay off roads all together???

We have a right to be there and everywhere anytime of the day. If you feel apologetic for being a cyclist then one can make other choices. Cape Town affords one the opportunity to participate in many sports that are lower risk and don't require as much management of one self and others.

As someone who enjoys many sports Cape Town is my playground. I have however learnt that in order to enjoy each of the experiences you have to be prepared to share, without taking the lions portion.

Want to cycle at night. Anyone should be allowed to do so safely without incurring the wrath of fellow cyclists when an irresponsible motorist takes them out.

You're the one who says it's not safe to cycle in the dark and "lights are only for seeing the road" Huh??

People on this thread are the problem in this sport. No one can stick together for a common cause which is why we always loose.

Stick together to annoy other road users when there are multiple options of avoiding that? Nought, dude then you're on your own!

We blame all these entitled "roadies" while Mountain bikers are responsible for more rogue riding and stakeholder management to maintain existing networks.

What the flaming fork has this now got to do with the topic in discussion here?

If Tubehunter was the cyclist then this thread would have a different title Probably something like: "Git Driver drives irresponsibly while passing, will it never change".

You keep referring to me in the third person whilst trying to have an online argument with me? What is the point of this? Is this your way of trying to ignore me, whilst still being able to reply?

So please continue with the name calling. I'm looking forward to the big reveal.

A scenario you clearly refuse to understand.

More third person discussion whilst I am right here. Tube. Tubehunter all work fine. You can park soeker.

all this red and still no answer.

just face it, you're don't know what you're talking about. In fact you're talking utter kuck.

please provide your road safety bible with safe times for every road in Cape Town. Please I want to see it, clearly in your mind there is need. Get writing

I've just realised that you clearly haven't a clue. The volume of traffic on Rhodes Drive is always dense, often there is not much gap for cars too pass anyway.

So you have this bee under your bonnet, please start a campaign to ban cyclists from Rhodes Drive. You're on PPA Exco aren't you?

If I can't hit the road up to Constantia Nek by 6:15am by the latest, I don't do it, there is no space and don't like holding others up, wider than the ride rule or not,  someone will lose their patience and the guy on the bicycle will be worse off

Nope no need to start a petition or a road safety book of any sorts. Just a plea to fellow cyclists to consider an alternative as the road conditions make it less safe than what it already is at that specific time of the morning.

Shot dude! Fairly useful sum up of the point I have been trying to get across.

Isn't it 16? because if that's the case then Kate Walsh was a very naughty girl for lying to me like that in std 6.

So this isn't the thread where i should say that I really think cyclists should consider using more lights on their persons now that the seasons are changing? ( well in general actually) but hey, it's my opinion that they are not making themselves as visible as possible to aid them NOT being knocked over by a motorist (inconsiderate or not). So this is my plea: please take a look at yourselves before you leave the house and think... " if I was a car would I see me??"

Dude, you sound just like me, "the light evangelist" ;)  - when teams DJR and Beattbox ride together, we look like a small forest of Christmas trees on the move! We might even bring a little bit of joy to motorists. :D

Edit: OK, just to be more p.c. - We also resemble a mobile Divali festival! :)
