Headset Replacement

My fork had some play in the headset, when I opened it up, some of the bearing fell out. I also noticed the washer for the bearings was quite worn.

My headset had open bearings, can I replace this with a sealed bearing headset?

Do I need to replace the whole headset, or just the part with the bearings?

I think, you might have to replace the whole headset for one with sealed bearings. Maybe someone with better knowledge can confirm

I think mentioning what bike and model or a picture should help the hub ekspets give advice ....

Thanks for the advice.

The bike is a Silverback Sola 1, it is definitely an open bearing headset.

Post a picture because I would be surprised if you have an open bearing headset - especially if you have the tapered fork.  Also you refer to a "washer" being worn.  Are you sure this is not the seal from a cartridge bearing that has come apart?  In any event if you want to change from an open to cartridge headset you will need to replace the whole headset.  If the races of than open headset are pitted you will also need to replace the whole thing.  If it is sealed bearing headset you can replace just the bearings.

Yep Scott and a few others put a cartridge bearing in the top  of the headset and a normal  bearing in the lower...You can get a lower replacement kit...(Crownrace.. sealed cartridge bearing and seat)Be warned not cheap...or you can just replace the normal bearing for a lot cheaper but requires more regular servicing.

I replaced my Titan non sealed headset with a new sealed headset for 350. OK was like 2 years ago. This included cups and all other related parts for a straight steerer.
