To answer Slowbee, yes it does have more bob than the Anthem. However, Golefty has a very valid point here:

"For an active bike you have to make the trade off of either controling the amount of bob to get the sensitivity or make the suspension firmer and let the tyre handle small bump sensitivity."

I play around with my orbea's shock pressure depending on the terain I'm riding. While training for the epic and doing long gravel road type stuff, I was pumping it real hard and riding without the lockout. Then it performs almost like a hardtail, only absorbing the big bumps eg. errosion washouts  etc.

However, if I'm riding something like Delvera or Jonkershoek, I ride it much softer to avoid tail chatter on the technical stuff and then simply lock it out on the hardpack (the orbea has a remote lockout).

In all honesty, the only time you feel you are wasting energy is if you ride it soft on the tar, but that's what the lockout is for. btw, let's not even get into the "pedalling efficiently" debate ie. smooth circles, because that also has a huge impact on the amount of bobbing you're going to experience.

btw... Marius, 2 bottles are the deciding factor for many unsponsored endurance racers. Many hate racing with a camelback as it tends to make you overheat in karoo type temperatures and places strain on your lower back and backside... maybe that's why your legs fall off after 60kms on the mtb Wink

Yes, pump it too soft and it will bob... but so will 90% of all FS.

That frozen CB will only keep you cool for the 1st hour and that's the hour that you normally want to be warm because it's so early in the morning LOL.

average guy - your views on the 3 bikes in terms of this thing called pedal bob?

That is really tough. I can only comment on the bikes that I have ridden. And I have not had the chance to ride any of those. What I can say is that the Virtue is said to be a very good performer in the pedalling department. This is from literature I have read. The Anthem, remember is a very different beast. It has very short travel and is geared to XC racing. Meaning that I am sure that it is totally bob free, but that will be at the expense of general suspension performance. The bottom line for anyone. Test the bike you want to buy.

I did a ride in January with someone on one of these protos. Thought of taking pics and posting on the hub but didn't want to be seen as acknowledging a Raleigh

Not so Buff, I take mine out at 5 the morning and pour one more bottle in with the already frozen part. I put the bladder in my Camelbak. 4hours later when the race starts I put it on, it?s still frozen, so much so I can?t get juice from it.

It only starts to defrost when it gets in contact with Body Temp and then at a very slow rate. I love this cuz my drink is ice cold during the whole race up to 5hours.

I?ve done races over 2hours and at the end of it still have a large block of ice left.

Ultemetly you need to know how much to freez and how much cold juice t add, but it comes with time.

I use frozen water bottles at 750ml when training, it takes about 30mins of riding before you can start drinking from it, and starts getting warm after about 1h45. My training rides are not longer than 2hours so it's perfect for then.

Minty - Go and play on the highway !

Pumping your shock untill it feels like a HT is a very baaad idea . Especially if you got the 3 setting on ur shock . Bikes don't bob , it is the rider that bobs . If you don't know how to pedal efficiantly you will be a bobber .

I have never seen a bike without pedal induced bob, the Spez with the brain, the Idrive, Anthem with SPV, bikes with 5th Element, all move when you pedal (and this is from watching these bikes on tar). you need a bike that is engineered to MINIMISE this movement and not compromise the action of the shock. it is a compromise between traction, comfort, speed and power.

Well said. You can also add maintenance.  The more links in the system the more bearings you have to worry about.  That is the beauty of single pivot frames but you must know that you sacrificing performance for simplicity.
