To the guys who post other suggestions, please keep in mind the budget is around R35k.  Please also state why you recommend it over A and B.

Price?  Better carbon?  Better groupset?  Lighter?  Cheaper?  Warranty?  etc.

Thnx

My advice, as another poster also recommended, is to do your own build with the components you want.  No one bike at a budget of R35K will have a well balanced collection of parts.  I was extremely lucky to get a 2014 XTC Advanced SL 29er frameset new in box. Even then my son's build still came out quite a bit over R40K.

Frame = 12800

Wheelset = 12000 (Industry Nine Torch hubs with ZTR Crest)

RS Reba = 5000

Shimano 2 blade XT Groupset with brakes = 7500

Thompson Alu seatpost = 1000

And these are only some of the parts

You might be able to save on the hubs by getting Hope or something cheaper, but only by about 3000.

You can pick up a set of ZRT Crest with hope hubs for 5 k , on CWC

The best one is the one that:

1. Fits you (that includes geometry) - you'll ride more.

2. Is in your budget.

3. Stokes you to ride lots.

Beware of marketing BS.

There is no such thing as 'better carbon' despite the stupid names the various manufacturers come up with.

Good Luck!

What!  Really?  Damn buggers...

When I priced the same last year the breakdown were:

Hubs = 3500

ZTR Crest rims = 2000

Spokes = 200

Build = 2000

CWC did not have these last year.  Good deal.  Sure it did not fell off a truck?

If it was my money I would consider The Scott 920, Storm 1 or the Gt Carbon. Go have a test ride withe each of them and then decide.  These three are the best value for money. If you are lucky you might even get a Scott 910 for that price. I do not like the XTC's riding position, but you might just, so try is as well.

You have a very nice decision to make and I wish I was in your shoes!

2nd hand = more warranty issues

Interesting to hear.

I've owned around 20 different bikes over 25 years of riding & racing and only once submitted a warranty claim for anything. It was a pair of crappy carbon pedals, back in 1999....

Oh, only about 5 of those bikes were "new". When you've been at it for as long as I have, you chuckle in your sleeve when you see people paying full retail for new stuff just because someone told them some story about "warranty issues".

Only about 11K for the frameset? Jeez! Less than half the price of a scott scale rc frameset

go out and look for a Scott 910 2014, you'll get one for about 30k full XT, I love the 2015 looks / colours, the other option is the Silverback Storm 1, awesome looking bike

Martin, I would like nothing more than to have a bike sponsored or pay cost price for a new bike.

I just don't want to buy a 2nd hand bike only to find a crack 6 months later which some shop or manufacturer decides not to replace due to fine print in the warranty. If you know a way around it, do share.
