cpelser Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Buy a carbon hardtail frame new, spend at most R15k.Buy the current special full XT groupset from CWC @ R6900Buy a RS Reba @ R6kBuy the current special ZTR Crest/Hope special from CWC @ R5000Spend the rest on carbon seatpost, stem and handlebar and buy a proper saddle. Will be WAY better specs than you can buy new. PS - If you're a large and would consider buying 650B, then CWC also has a Fondriest carbon frame on special for R5900 If you HAVE to buy new, go for the silverback, they just won the final stage and Prologue of the Epic with their hardtails and their service is excellent. Lastly, Bike Addict has a merida and titan special, you can get very good value there, both brands also have very good after sales service from what I've read.
cpelser Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Okay, found a bike for you:http://www.vbike.co.za/ Thy're clearing out 2014 stock.XTC Composite 2014 (M) Was R27499 Now R21999 Save the extra R10k, put it into your bond or something. They also have the Scale 920 in M, was R29999 now R22999 If you were a small or large, they have nice dual sus options too.

You can buy the Storm 1 with the same specs as above and a better fork (SID) for the same price or less than building it yourself 2014 Model: http://cyclelab.com/bikes/mountain-bikes/silverback-storm-29-mountain-bike-white.html 2015 Model: http://www.singletrack.co.za/p/774200/silverback-storm-1

For the rest I agree EDIT: I lied, see they're Stan's 330, not too bad, but Hope is better still
burty Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Burty, I think I bought your SC, great bike!! best handling ever! That's right, best HT ive ridden out of the 3 I had ) miss that dam thing BUT loving the scalpel though
NelAndre Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Werner: I bought a Merida BIG Nine 5000 FC at a shop in Pta East last year for 34k. Full Carbon, Fox Factory fork, Red Fullcrum wheel set, Full XTR components. Sure they have stock available. That is if you want a hardtail. As someone else has posted you can get great dual suss for that price.
Captain Fastbastard Mayhem Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Martin, I would like nothing more than to have a bike sponsored or pay cost price for a new bike. I just don't want to buy a 2nd hand bike only to find a crack 6 months later which some shop or manufacturer decides not to replace due to fine print in the warranty. If you know a way around it, do share.one word. Insurance

Very small weight difference, and the REBA is actually stronger as a result of that. Same internals. Same performance. Same everything. Only time I'd recommend a SID is if you're really, really, really looking at saving grams and are at the top end of the sport.
MarcL Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Looking to buy a 29er carbon hardtail. Budget is ±R35k.Would like to stick with Shimano shifters. Current options are... A) Scott Scale 920 @ R35,999B) Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Carbon 29 @ R32,999C) ? Recommendations/pros/cons?Frame issues?Difficulty to get a warrany replacement? Please keep in mind the budget is around R35k. Please also state why you recommend it over A and B. Price? Better carbon? Better groupset? Lighter? Cheaper? Warranty? etc. HiI can only comment on the bike I have which is the Scale 910. For me a truly amazing bike and unbelievably comfortable for a hard tail. I think if you google around, most reviews will rate the Scale as the best hard tail.My wife recently bought the 920 after some serious looking around. She decided on 920, with no influence from me, as it was the most comfortable. (compared to Silverback and Cannonade)Her riding has improved 10 fold on the bike and she has become a weapon downhill. Her words "just point and shot, the bike does the rest" Scott 920 all the way is my vote - great bike / great spec and light too... Hope that helps? Marc
LazyTrailRider Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Martin, I would like nothing more than to have a bike sponsored or pay cost price for a new bike. I just don't want to buy a 2nd hand bike only to find a crack 6 months later which some shop or manufacturer decides not to replace due to fine print in the warranty. If you know a way around it, do share. I'm not saying you need to be sponsored or pay cost price. Of course only a select few are in that position. What I'm saying is that buying something brand new at full retail off the shelf cost is unnecessary. An example: My current bike is a Pyga 110, which came together as follows:I bought the full bike used, with the frame and shock in excellent condition, but the drivetrain and wheelset only in acceptable condition.Acceptable is not good enough for me, so I stripped everything and sold the drivetrain, wheels and cockpit to 4 different people to use on project bikes they were building.I had started putting together a wishlist of components I'd want on whatever I built up about 4 months before I bought the bike, so I:Got an XT brakeset on a CWC sale at 25% discount.Bought a Novatec wheelset on sale from Evobikes, also around 20% discount.Shipped in an XX1 chainset I found on sale in the UK at about 40% discountOrdered misc finishing items from a sale on CRC, about 15% below local pricing at that point. When building, I fitted new bearings on the frame, new seals on the fork that it came with. All in all, I ended up with what was a mechanically pretty much new bike, at not even *close* to full retail. Yes, it took a couple of months, but waiting for stuff to arrive is half the fun! When buying a bike/frame used, all you need to do is have a *very* careful look at it, even get an experienced buddy to also give the frame the close-up magnifying glass treatment. Abused frames and components are easy to spot, ideally it's always the best bet to find something which has only been used for a few months (or a few rides), typically bought by someone who thought they'd like it but ended up not doing so.
Scott2luvit Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 This was my dream last year, but didn't have the budget at thw time. 2015 model is R5k more. Can't find a shop with a Med 910 2014Bridge Cycles has a 2014 Scott Scale 920 for 25K, 10k to spend on lekker upgrades
