thanks for the feedback.

are there any do's or don'ts that I should be aware of that is different to a full road closure race?

I know the area from riding SBR quite often and know that the wind can blow there.

Just be aware of your surroundings and glance behind you when rolling up the side of a bunch, to make sure there isn't a car trying to squeeze past. Don't cross over the white line into the oncoming lanes.

If HBO's target is sub 3hr for Argus then I'd guess his target for these flattish Gauteng races should be sub 2h40 at least? From my limited experience of racing up there (this is my third visit north) the bunches don't break up and they're pretty damn fast. A batch should finish comfortably above 40km/h average speed, and front of B batch around 40. Argus times should be quite a bit slower, if I'm right?

that might be optimistic

I came 4th in Al last year and I think we hit 38.82 km/h max

The first time I reached 40 km avg was with the elites

But in order to hit sub 3 at argus you need to do atleast a 2:40 in the 94.7 IMO.

Last time I did argus was in 2013 I did a 3:11 from C batch, and 2012 I did 94.7 in 2:45

But now the 94.7 is harder and we did not have a full Argus this year, so those values will also change

I will be happy with Sub 3 at this moment. I still have 6 months left to train for Argus and after the R4V we will start increasing the training tempo. I've just received my program for Sept this morning and it gets tough, but as they say: "if your workout doesn't scare you, it isn't hard enough" ^_^  I also still have at least another 7 kg to loose before the Argus which will definitely happen.

The biggest challenge for a sub 3 Argus is to get an entry in the lucky draw  :whistling:

Here's the wind forecast for Sunday... under normal conditions, the wind blows anywhere from NW to N. This has a Westerly early on and then an Easterly around 11:00.

As the prediction currently stands, and with the open groups scheduled to start around/after 07:40/07:45, a 3 hour ride could end with a tailwind...

That't not to heavy a wind, except for late on and if you still out there at 11 i feel for you! as it goes from 8km/h -> 20km/h

The Ride for Sight in Feb is usually a fairly good indicator for whether or not you'll go sub 3 at Argus.

My most recent reference is Emperors Palace in April. B's came in around 40km/h, A's about 4 min faster, VA's in about 2h20 and if I remember right you did it in about 2h18 with the elites. In my bunch all breakaway attempts were easily pulled back so the bunches stayed big and fast.

One issue to bring up for HBO is whether the short course people join up with the 10pkm course in the closing km's. Because that makes for some hairy racing, esp. at the end when everyone is getting itchy. Slow riders swerving all over the place on your left, oncoming traffic on your right, as the racing bunches try to thread their way through the middle....

The short course people only join up with the rest on the short section that has road closure, as far as I can make out from the not to scale route map.

Yup. Agree with Baaisikilist.

Keeping left of the white line is probably the most important. Also beware of the idiot that don't keep left of the white line. When traffic approached he will just move across thinking you will give way.
