Sorry cant open the pic propely. Does it say 'mineral oil' on the bottle ? Thanks

Yes,

Castrol LHM+ mineral oil

most french cars use it in their power steering

Honestly shimano doesnt make the fluid either, they rebrand stuff from a supplier like castrol.

Its mineral oil it will work, it wont eat the seals. The price difference is just not enough to warrant me using unbranded stuff for that purpose. I do use unbranded fork oil.

Castrol LHM+ 1l = R150

Shimano 250ml = R120

only difference is the colour

Shimano bleeding is easy and fast. You don't even need the bleed kit. 2 x 20ml syringes from Dischem and some aquarium hose that fits on syringe and bleed nipple. And the spanner of course. The syringe plastic nipple screws into the bleed port of the brake lever. It's soft plastic so the metal thread of the reservoir will sit tight.

I have a litre of Shimano oil dusting on my shelf. Happy to sell some of it for say R50/100ml if you can pick it up. That will last you for quite a few bleeds

or you can buy  1l for R300

Yes its double but it hardly ever runs out. I got some from a friend way back when and still using it.

I have owned both and bled both. I find them both about the same in complexity but you need different bleed kits and different fluids - low viscosity mineral oil for shimano and Dot4 for Avid. Be careful not to mix the bleed kits and contaminate the fluids.

I bought a 1 litre bottle of shimano mineral oil for only about double the price of those hideously expensive little 50ml bottles that only hold enough to do one or two good bleeds.

The Castrol LHM+ is a hydraulic fluid designed primarily for Citroen hydraulic suspension systems and is rated from -40C to +100C. It can be used in braking systems but I think they sometimes get hotter than 100C so I prefer to buy the shimano fluid in the more cost effective 1l pack and have no worries. This is for a critical safety system on your bike after all....

I recently watched some videos on Bleeding brakes for both Avid and Shimano - and by the looks of it, bleeding Shimano brakes seems MUCH easier. Is it really much simpler?

After watching the Avid video I vowed never to touch the insides of my Avids. The Shimano videos actually made it look easy for the casual DIY person. With CWC's special I'm really start to contemplate to change from Elixir 5's to SLX's.

What are your thoughts on this? Is it worth spending on a new brakeset, to servicing costs?

I've never had problems with the actual stopping power. I just don't like taking my bike to the LBS every time a brakepad or a rotor gets replaced or when the brakes need the slightest of adjustments.

Shimano Piece of P***, Avid f'ing nightmare

Koei -  PLEEEAASE can I have your Avids if you replace them!

My Avids work great - no issues and bleeding is fine if you have a good bleed kit.

Avids are serviceable and Shimano's not - if they brake you gooi weg.

What I love is when guys replace their k** Avids they want to sell them for two arms and three legs.   ???

Btw - Avids seem to me more plush.

IE - spongy?

It's not a fork, you don't want plush, you want firm with feel which Shimano has in spades.

I have formula brakes they also got DOT fluid like the avids, it's a little trickier but I have bled it by myself more than once.

The only difference is that that the DOT need to pull the bubbles out by creating a vacuum (all videos show this step)

But it's not a mission, I don't think it's worth changing over.

DOT fluid is corrosive and so make sure you have a disc cleaner fluid handy in case you mess.

We can be friends.

I hate those bastard avids, when they come off a bike they are best kept in the biggest bonfire

My wive has a Cannonade with Avid 5's I have my Shimano XT's.

XT's DEF allot easier.

And as far they're not serviceable... well I've not found a reason or need to,
