Trek suspension vs Pyga suspension

well if colour comes down to it - i am sorted.

 

Just seen this in the bike shop with x9, suntour air in the front cant remember the wheels. WTB frequency DTS 350 hubbs, breaks elxir 5. in for 30K.

This is what I would buy my wife if/when she starts riding again!

 

Edit:

Exact same geo as my SC 5010: HA = 68 (with recommended 130mm fork); Rear locks out 100%. Fit a 30.9 dropper-post and Bob's your uncle.

 

Note on SC sizing: VERY small. I am 166cm short (rounded UP :whistling: ) and ride a medium with a 35mm stem.

My girlfriend did the Epic with me and she still doesn't know if her front brake is on the left or right. But she loooooooves her wine red Intense to pieces.... sigh....

that describes lots of people doing stage races, hence the bottle-necks.

This is what I would buy my wife if/when she starts riding again!

over both the trance (more travel and better spec), and anthem and trance sx (ok thats three).

and that is why we are happy at the back, like the bottom third back. Cause then we all  understand why we have to wait a while. Tend to make more friends that way.

I haven't ridden the others, to be honest. I do, however, love the look of the Juno. Very simplistic suspension design that single pivot. Will be easy maintenance wize, as well. My bike also has 125mm travel and haven't bottomed it out (G-spot/Eden/Coetzenburg). Geometry is very forgiving, while still climbing very efficiently.

 

If you go this route, you can get a frame and spec it to your liking (wheel/fork upgrade based on stated spec) and still come in under R35k (compared to Silverback). Dragon had a demo Juno a few months back which I saw it at my LBS in Stellenbosch. That said, you will not match the Silverback's spec (Revelations and X1). BUT your wife will love the colour.

So, as usual, one calls the bike shop wanting to find out about a test ride on a pyga 650. Trying to decide if the Mrs (an inexperienced rider) can try the 140 or the 120. Bike shop reckons the 120, no worries with that. BUT THEN, drops a curve ball on some good pricing on the trek fuel range. The 9.8, with reverb dropper, 2 x 11, full XT, carbon frame at R49k.

 

So now the question is, is there a huge difference in the way the suspension will affect the ride, especially for a beginner rider. A rider who is aiming to finish rides (think wine 2 whales, s2c, transkaroo, etc attakwas might just be out the range).

 

What think the experts? Or will the experts make the choice about as clear as boarding school pea green soup ?

 

What do the other lady riders think ?

From my wife's point of view - Order of importance

1 - Colour - Needs to be neutral enough to allow colour coding of here cloths

2 - Weight

3 - Weight

4 - Everything else....

 

For her getting up the hill is most important and for the races you mention, I can't see anyone needing 140mm of travel.

Also once on the single track passing opportunities become less, so get up the hill first and you'll properly stay there for a long time.

 

But that from my wife's point of view.

 

As a side note - the TREK looks like a killer deal on a great bike. 

 

Now go shopping!

If she doesn't like how it looks, it doesn't matter if it's 15mm or 250mm or 60 deg or 80 deg, it's just 'not nice'.

A bit off-topic, but my experience: My wife just started enjoying cycling when she became pregnant with our eldest and stopped riding altogether. At that point she used my 2004 Scalpel, on which she rightly decoupaged butterflies to make more feminine. The Scalpel's rear shock got busted and I couldn't find a reasonably priced replacement. I also cracked my previous bike's frame. Therefore had a lot of very good 26er parts. 

 

Always wanting a steel hardtail (n+1), I recently bought an OnOne frame to build all the 26er stuff onto. Ideally wanted a 456, but my wife - who's bike it is supposed to be, although I ride it too - didn't like any of the available colours. Ended up with a white Inbred which she loves: even more than the blue butterfly-decoupaged Scalpel. She actually said the Inbred is a bike she will feel proud to ride.

 

I'm taking this bike along on the next vacation on the family farm to get her to ride again (oupa & ouma will love babysitting).

 

My point: Sometimes you need to take lesser specs to get the flutter-in-your-stomach-feeling when you look at a bike.

 

Hope this also gives a an answer to your question re Trance/SX/Sliverback vs lower spec/shorter travel on the Juno

From a lady rider, let her ride all the possible bikes she can on the trails and decide.  Bike must be light and climb well..we dont care about the travel etc. If I had to choose for you..I go Santa Cruz.  Currently ride an Ellsworth and its the perfect bike but not sure of the prices nowadays.

we are going to look at them all tomorow and she which one she likes.

 

would rather her have the butterfly feeling and want to ride her bike, than have someone tell her which bike she should ride.In the end I have my choices narrowed down and the final choice will be hers to make.

Both of those bikes are great. Do it. Get them before they go!

My girlfriend is very new to cycling and started with my old anthem 26er that's a bit big for her. I quickly realized that a bit of extra of confidence on the downhills is the priority.

 

I got a small Zula frame with a 120mm Reba in the classifieds, some xtr wheels in the classifieds and a 2x10 slx groupset. All in around 14k for a nice trail bike.

 

I've been away for work for a few weeks but I look forward to seeing how she enjoys it.

 

After owning GT, Giant and Specialized bikes I must say I'm very impressed with the build quality of the Morewood frame.
