On dirt: Rondebosch to Constantia?

Just wondering what routes are about for getting from Rondebosch / Rosebank area through to Constantia without spending too much time on the blacktop.

None, unfortunately. I stay in Rondebosch at the moment, and cycled a lot in Tokai before the fire. There is basically no offroad route between the two, and most black top routes are very busy with cars, and also very narrow.

Have a look at this very useful map, might help:

Meh... figured as much. Still not 100% sure about where you can ride on the mtn behind me despite walking and riding there for the last 3+ years. and have a variety of maps. I see guys zipping past me in parts of Newlands forest when I'm walking my dogs that I thought were way off limits.

yeah they are called stupid selfish a** holes who spoil it for everyone else - hence the bike ban in Klein Constantia

its a bummer there is no trail joining table mountain trails to the tokai trails - its been talked about for years but nothing ever happened ..

these are the official table mountain mtb trails :http://www.tablemountainbikers.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/table_mtn_map.pdf

There is a way. You go on the Liesbeck river trail.

This starts at around the rondebosch shopping centre and follows the river to SACS. Then you pop through the park behind shell on Paradise motors on M3, then over the robots there onto the path there, up the river. Then you get to Canterbury dirve, then you can ride next to the road on Rhodes drive to one of the turn offs down to constania.

I am sure there are some dirt paths inbetween that may help, roadie here, so can only help with the cement bits.

ja. that's a bit patchy and not quite what i would call 'dirt' but def your best option.

with rondebosch=>constantia i was thinking main road/direct type options, but if you get up to cecilia then that's now open all the way to constantia nek. technically constantia, got some routes you can come down greenbelts then too.

otherwise there is the m5...hear me out. the island between the north/south bound roads is actually unimpeded grass from klipfontein all the way to royalcape golf course and you cross under the bridges. i think it needs a bikelane

I ride from the River Club in Obz along the cycle path, then follow the Liesbeeck River Trail to Paradise Motors, cross the M3 and ride further up the river to Kirstenbosch, then on the verge to Cicelia Forest, then along the Cork Oak Grove to Constantia Neck.

Otherwise I go up back streets to UCT and from there take the path running next to the M3, turn right to Kirstenbosch and stick to the verge like described above.

Virtually all of it is off the road or on short bits of quiet suburban back streets. Not really much in terms of single track, but still an interesting ride.

And there we have it ;)

I did this route today!! Here are some pics of where it gets tricky.

Update of location: This is behind St Josephs highschool, had to cross the river and then turn down this alley way.

Where is that? I've been looking at the various green belts around the route but there isn't a solid route coming to mind. The K/Bosch > Ceciia seems the best. Jeez, how old would it be if there was a link on the mountain from Kloof Nek all the way through to H'bay / tokai and beyond.

Oddly, was walking the contour path with the dogs today up near Newlands gorge on the boardwalk near the round picnic table and found a guy on a MTB cruising along. Quite odd.

Here was my route, I managed it on my Venge with Gatorskins 23c on. There was about 500m of grass and a bit of gravel.

Was lots of fun, if I had a CX bike could have gotten to the nek on the side of the road without getting on the road :P
