Alum Free Hub Body, 12/11t stripping splines

Hi All

I have managed to strip the end of the Alum Free hub Body twice recently now where the 11 or 12t cog on the cassette meets the body, with the most recent one being at the end of our Conters Ride this past Sunday. On the one wheelset I was using a decent XT cassette and the other a Deore Cassette.

Now this is getting very irritating and expensive....what could be the probable cause for this. Am I not tightening my lock ring on the cassette with enough force, should I just bin any and all Alum Body free hubs and get steel (MAKES THE MOST SENSE) or what else?

Attached is a rough sketch showing the area in question.

Installation error normally - check the installation torque needed - usually it's on the lock ring - pretty tight...

You just need a special tool that can go on the end of a torque wrench.

It normally says 40Nm on the lockring. That's moer tight. I probably only do mine to 15Nm and never had a problem. What hub are you using?

For me, 40 is tight for an aluminium bike component :)

I go toooigt tjchina ....never ever had this issue on my old steel f/hub bodies.

Current one as per Sundays ride is a Superstar Components EVO and the other F/Hub was a DT X1600

Is the lockring actually contacting the cassette properly?

Could we a case where the thread on the lockring is longer than that of the freehub, causing it not to bite the cassette into place and allowing the loose 11t cog to move about.

there was certainly no play in the 11/12t on the cassette.

just going to have to run the wheels as SS till I can lay my hands on a replacement f/hub body .... not easy getting those here from Superstar Components anymore since they changed their shipping policy,

I think you commented on a previous thread RE another hubber who found an alternative f/hub body in CT for the EVO hubs ..... do you recall who this was, it was following one of the trips to the Alps if I recall correctly.

I think it was Dave. May be totally off though. That, or Duane. Though I may be totally off...

I have just this minute picked up a WTB 29" wheel from the LBS and it has the same problem, exactly.  It is not worth repairing they said but my problem is exactly as the picture and almost brand new wheel.
