Hi BigBen! Where did you get hold of Presta type BMX tubes - no cycle shop I've called in Pta has any in stock!Cry

I did my tubeless convertion on Friday night.  It worked 100%.  I bought my BMX tubes at GAME.

Cool! I assume Presta valves?

I am going to try a bmx tubeless conversion. I left the tube hanging out as in in BigBens picture.

Do any of you who have done the conversion experience friction at the point where the rim and the tyre attach, as the tube is in between. I am worried the tube might wear out. I noticed that the Joes/Stans strips seem to cover just the bottom of the rim.

I don't see that as a problem cause that's not where the seal between the tyre and the rim strip is made, does that make sense?

The material of the bead per se has nothing to do with whether it will seal or not. The only instance which I can think of when a wire bead will not seat is if it has a kink in it.

The integrity of the seal has to do with the amount of meat - rubber meat - on the bead.

Quick Question: Do you have to use 20" tubes? Can't you use a normal 26" tube? Why, why not?

  • 2 weeks later...

I've used conti 20" tubes with the removable presta core. Checked mine today, remove core, used an old spoke to check the level- zero stans left. Found a 20 ml syringe, and a needle with the biggest gauge i've seen, 22 or 24 gauge, from vet supplies, and used it to inject the stans into the presta valve, replaced core, pumped up (I've got a compressor), and it worked fine.

So having acquired a new steed, I set out to convert it to tjoopless.

Bontrager are now producing a plastic strip (as opposed to butyl) which sits tightly inside the rim cavity. So I bought a couple together with some tubeless valves.

Did the conversion on Saturday morning and visited the garage to use their compressor as the wire-beaded tyres (WTB's) wouldn't allow me to use my floor pump to inflate the tyres (as opposed to the Specialized tyres I have on my Santa Cruz).

I get a reasonable seal and monitor the pressure during the course of the day. Of course being a new conversion air does escape and on Sunday morning when I checked, the pressure had settled to around 1 bar. I added some air but when I got to around 2.2 bar of pressure, I hear the inevitable sound of air escaping. I managed to get a seal and left it at what I thought was a reasonable pressure.

Anyway, off I trundle on a 53k jaunt of Alberts Farm, the Botannical Gardens, the Spruit, Delta Park etc and realise that the pressure in my tyres is too low. Nevertheless, there isn't any Stans leaking and I leave the pressure as it was till I got home.

Thinking that all the revoultions that the wheels had done in the 53k's would have sealed any areas that had the potential for air to escape, I pumped up the tyres with the floor pump and once again on reaching around 2.2 bars, I heard the "pssssst" of air escaping. Damn !!!

All I can think is that with the Bontrager plastic strip in place, there isn't enough space in the rim for the tyre to "hook" in properly and as soon as a certain pressure is reached, the "seal" breaks.

So, I'm going to take out the plastic strips, wrap some Joes/Stans tape around the rim cavity to seal the holes and try again with the tubeless valves.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Hey Thug, I had a similar situation with the plastic Bontrager strips in LBB Cane Creeks and eventually found it was the little o-ring on the valve that was not seated properly. Seated them both and all well.

Not sure if it'sthe same thing but worth a shot?
