Lower back pain

I do, as it's exactly what led to my injury. I was quite shocked how strong my core was and how underdeveloped my lower back was. But I was totally unaware of this until a the chiro highlighted it and gave me strengthening exercises (and I tore a disc... :whistling: ). Quite a common issue with cyclists apparently. I suspect I was also doing core work incorrectly.

 

Why do you say that?

Lol..glad I am not the only asking so many questions :clap:. My toddler also asks me a lot to put her on my shoulders and walk around. She is now learning to potty train and when she goes to the loo she then likes to leave her brookies off and run around nude...and then ask me to lift her on my shoulders... :o  

 

So you still got several years of shoulder work I'm afraid :nuke:

Why do you say that?

Core work should also include lower back development, however not all core exercises achieve this. Core and lower back are muscle groups that compliment one another and should work in conjunction. A few seconds of Mackenzie extensions showed me that my lower back was all but redundant, and I had been relying on my core and mid-back to compensate.

V12 MAN, it sounds like you are a medical doc? My Chiro tells me to stop cycling because it is bad for my posture and back, your opinion? core work??

Watch Ninos video and then tell me he has a bad posture.... then duck...

 

My opinion is that any exercise is bad for something... but no exercise is bad for everything.

 

Ride your bike - be happy - and find a new chiro...

Yip, most core programmes target only the "vanity" muscles, i.e. the front / stomach.

 

For decent spinal support, you need to work the back muscles and the ones on the sides.

 

Kettle-bells are very good for building core properly but you HAVE to know what you're doing.

Even better...find a decent physio who will address yr posture AND any soft tissue damage

I have been meaning to give feedback on my issue.

 

Went to get xrays and doesnt seem like anything major, no herniated discs or the like.

 

From the report it shows my issue is muscle spams. I went to the physio for a few sessions and although it helped, the issue still remains. Inwas given stretched tondo which i do but not too dedicated to them as it takes time.

 

Anyway, is there something else i should be considering to sort this out? Dont want to go back to the physio if it just a short term solution or is it a mattet of doing my stretches more regularly and dealing with it?

Bit off topic but had the very same problem this week. Went to the doc and the result was Shingles. Damn, my back hurts.

Oooh eina you have my sincere sympathies

Had that on my chest a few years ago.... also struggle with lower back pain but shingles is worse... luckily it is easier to get rid of compared to lower back pain.

The age old question of lower back pain... read a few threads, tried a few things but none seem to work... So posting here just to confirm the causes of this...

 

A few months ago I moved to a Yeti SB66. Medium frame (I am 180cm). I have a short 45mm stem with a 760 wide handlebar...

 

It only seems to happen when I do some distance on the bike, for the more gnarly enduro stuff it doesn't affect me at all... 

 

Any ideas? The frame is known to have a longer top tube than most but I feel comfortable, just this massive pain after about 30km in

In my experience.... the biggest contribution to easing back pain is bike set up, basically raise your handle bar height.

Then try not push hard gears / low cadences.

Improve flexibility (hamstrings, hip flexor, quads, lower back) and core strength.

 

Your still young.... work on the flexibility and core now to invest in your future...otherwise i

Time to get committed to a proper core strengthening program - spasms you may have, but you are losing the natural curve of your back, and that generally means you have weakness somewhere and poor posture.

 

Good biokinetician and some commitment to doing the hard yards.... if your spasms bug you you can take something like Neurophen (after meals) and add 1 magnesium tab to your daily vitamin intake - any brand will do.

 

Unfortunately I don't know any good bio's on the east rand, but I am sure someone will know one local to you.

Thanks. I have some magnesium tablets i will start taking and doing some core training. Will also search a bio to get checked out. Will they advise on a program?

 

How would i knw where my weakness is causing my back to loose its curve? Can you get that curve back?

The bio will identify the weaknesses and provide rehab training to address those.

Be patient and diligent in those stupid little exercises. It works, but like riding it takes time to build up.

Just some feedback on this. Went to the Bio as suggested and been there for a few weeks. He assessed me and we started the whole stretching and core workouts.

 

Since then I have not had a spasm but still have, lets call it a niggle, and some fatigue in the lower back when I do some strenuous stuff. I have been dedicated and doing the stretches and exercises every morning and night, bar a night or morning here or there, and it has made it a lot better.

 

Then, the bio suggested a visit to the Chiro next door so off I went and showed him my x-rays. He immediately identified that it's my fact joints that are causing the problem as he can see a "large" gap and there should not be such a large gap and then went on to explain a lot of other medical stuff like as we age everything deteriorates and its how we manage it.

 

So he did the needling and cracked my back into place and have done that twice now and its been a lot better but still have to be careful and manage this rather than it being a permanent fix which by the sounds of it, there is none.

Those facet joints look so blurred you can't tell on the space..... perhaps get a decent scan done by a radiologist who knows how to measure them properly... and focus a scanner....

 

Stick to your core and stretching.... don't give up on that - thats not to say that the odd manipulation won't help at all - but it's not a long term treatment.
