Once you've got the Rules under the belt and the correct Kit on your back, you need to start training......

The Freedom Challenge is an extreme endurance race, so you need to be fit in all places, top to toe, even though if you want to race or to ride, you will spent long hours on your bike, some of it in a group and if you race, most of it on your own.

To get mentally and physically fit, you need to spend long hours on your bike with your backpack filled with the same weight as you would be riding.

My normal training program look something like this in the months from November to February.

  • Monday -Rest Day
  • Tuesday - 2 Hours Endurance riding with 60 minutes running
  • Wednesday - 2 Hours Endurance Riding
  • Thursday - 2 Hours Endurance with 60 minutes running
  • Friday - 2 Hours Endurance riding
  • Saturday - 3 to 5 Hours Endurance Riding
  • Sunday - 5 to 8 Hours Endurance Riding

The aim is to :

  • getting your bum use to the weight with the back pack on
  • build a base for the next level of training.
  • with the running is to get your knees in shape for the climbing.

The best thing about training for the Freedom Challenge is that you get to eat almost anything without picking up weight........

Enjoy !!!

·         Various plasters

2 Liter ice cream boxes

Clothing :

Ø  One set of proper boots, which will last the whole way and support your ankles and keep the cold outside. I use the Shimano  MW81 gore tex or the Shimano MT 91 boot with great success. I actually prefer the MT 91 boot because then you don’t need overshoes. Remember to buy a size bigger than your normal shoes, because you will wear one thick pair of socks + ‘n thin base layer most of the time.

Ø  1 x pair of Sealskin socks

Ø  1 x Assosbase layer socks

Ø  1 x Assos tights no insert

Ø  1 x Assos / HH body insolator

Ø  2 x Assos pants with different insert to vary pressure points

Ø  1 x Assos Arm warmers

Ø  1 x semi waterproof Soft shell jacket

Ø  2 x buffs, one around the neck and the other to cover your head.

Ø  1 x Cycling shirt

Ø  1 x short gloves

Ø  1 x long finger gloves

Ø  1 x waterproof winter gloves

Ø  1 x rain jacket & pants

Ø  1 x short pants for sleeping

Ø  1 x shirt for sleeping

The Freedom Challenge is not all about physical fitness, from Rhodes everybody would have more or less the same physical fitness level, it’s more about mental fitness. The biggest enemy on the Freedom Challenge are yourself and your attitude and of cause Klaas Vaakie……..

Your biggest advantage on the Freedom Challenge will be to stay positive no matter what happens and not to fight the elements when mother nature unleash them. It took Graham and me more than 16 hours to do 170km ( 10km/h) on the flattish stretch between Willomore and Prince Albert last year when we had a very special rainy headwind on a sandy road.

The basic plan need to be to go as far as possible every day, so as to have something in the bag when the **** hits the fan…..
