Tubeless Tyre Warps

Hi All

So I tried my hand at doing this simple job, replace valve, put new sealant in, re do tubeless tyre on MTB.

All went well, while pumping the tyre to make sure everything seated I hear like the loudest bang ever, neighbours probably though a gunshot went off.  One I recovered I saw the whole tyre burst off, with sealant all over the place.

Tyre all good and I started again.  Now it is sealing and but the tyre is warped, almost like there is a part not seating properly.  I deflated it, tried re-inflating in numerous times, but gave up.  Do I just need more soap and water, or is the bead damaged and therefore cannot seat properly?

Any advise please.

I had the same thing happen to me. That tyre is toast. The bead is damaged. In fact, it was probably damaged a bit while stripping or putting back. That's why I don't like ZTR rims. You can easily damage tyre beads in the struggle to get it on or off the rim. Then when you inflate. ..... boom. Sorry bud. Remove and replace. And be careful. Or get WTB rims:-)

PS. And good luck with getting the sealant off the walls and ceiling.

Thanks for the reply

Luckily it was outside, but clothes are ruined.

It seems like it is stuck in the middel of the rim, you recon there's nothing I can do about it?

If it is the ZTR's how do I prevent it in the future, cause I am trying to get away from the biks shops. I read they say you must inflate it with a tube in first?

As he says the tire is poked. You probably broke the bead. Watch compatibility with ZTR rims as there are certain tyres whose bead is too hard or tight to get on. Geax are notorious.

Positive on ZTR is that they have a genuine bead/notch where the tyre hooks in to. I have ridden with completely flat tyres that have not come off the rim because of this.

Man I wish I had that on a Youtube video - it must have been hilarious.

I once did this with a tube after the tubeless failed - was up at about 4 Bar when there was a massive bang and after I nearly sh@t myself I found that the whole tyre had departed the rim. These were old DT Swiss narrow rims - pre tubeless. Goo from the tube everywhere - looked like something out of an internet porn Bukake movie. Dogs barking in the house, wife worried about what was going on in the garage. It was quite a scene.

The stories around fitting tubeless tyres to rims could make a whole Youtube genre up...

Watch this - it is something that I found which should make future filling of tyres a lot easier. Logical and so simple...

Only issue would be when the sealant sticks in the needle - so keep it thin....

Not to hammer on a topic, but after all that last night I inflated the tire to about 40/40psi.  It held the air but was still warped, does that still mean that the beading is shot?

Yes.

As per the last many posts, get a new tyre.

The threads in the casing have ripped. Ride it if you like, but it'll never be straight again and will give you traction issues.

Yes. It means the bead is shot. It's warped because the bead us not seated properly where it is damaged. The bead was probably ripped when the tyre went boom.. That can pop at any time. Don't trust it. Get a new trye. It's not that expensive.

Just some feedback

I tried again last night and although it did seal again there was a slight warp.

Took it in to the shop this morning and explained the whole saga to them and they just basically did what they did and it is all good now.  Still a very slight warp, but they recon it should straighten out when I cycle.

I'm curious, so let me ask you a question. You started a thread looking for answers. These answers were an emphatic, "the tyre is shot, buy a new tyre". Clearly this was not the answer you were hoping for and you have decided to ignore the advice given. If you did not trust the advice, why did you ask in the 1st place?

When you are hammering it down a steep hill on an off camber track and the tyre lets go planting you on your face you will need more than a new tyre. That bead is stuffed, get a new tyre.

The tyre will never be 100% again....Out of experience I can tell you to buy a new tyre. The tyre will come off eventually and you will land on your face.

To come to those conclusions a lot of assumptions were made, maybe the tyre isn't so bad.

From a similar experience I had its not the bead that's stuffed some of the threads in the side wall have torn which weakens it and it bulges at that point. I rode mine for a while like that, as long as you are not the kind of rider that rails it into the corner with every thing hanging on the grip and quality of the tyre it should be ok.

I would not push the tyre hard though and replacing it would be the wisest option but then again this is the hub....

A few scratches in the face is one thought.

Broken bones are another. Goes quicker than you think.

New tyre. No chances. More fun.

Let me put it another way "The bead is compromised".

You are compromising your safety - take it or leave it.

You could be lucky.
