Mavic 819 Rim Issues

Hi Yall,

Want to replace the spokes (some are bent), nipples and while I am at it the hub also.

I have the spokes, nipples and hub but two places have said they cannot do it due the eyelets and a special tool needed.

My questions:

1) Do I need to remove the tire? As far as I understand these rims are sealed so I cannleave the tire on and due to the eyelet story.

2) Can I just use pliers to remove the eyelets?

3) I am no wheel builder but if I get to fit all the spokes how do I true the wheel?

4) Anyone have any experience with these rims or can assit in building it for me?

I cant really afford an expensive wheel build so trying to do this myslef but have no clue on wheel building nor have all the right tools, not a good combination.

Any adice please.

If it is the Park Tool SW 13 (or SW 12) wrench that you need then I have it.  Re your questions 1) you should remove the tire because it is difficult to true radially with the tire on. 2) As Droo pointed out rather use the tool than pliers or grips. 3) Truing the wheel is a little complicated as the thread is very coarse when compared to a standard nipple so very small adjustments have a big effect on the rim. 4) Before you even start to rebuild make 100% sure that you have the right spokes.  Take a good one out on each side and check the new ones for length.  Also be sure that all the eyelets are movable and none have siezed in the rim.

Trying to be more hands on with regards to maintenance but taking in all the advice, I will take it in as I do not have the skills nor tools and if I try to do it then it will cost more if I bugger it up.

Appreciate all the responses and advice.

What's confusing to me is that the 2 bike stores you went to didn't have a Mavic spoke wrench?! Just looking at the classifieds section, Mavic rims are quite common.

Am I missing something here?

The one said they did not have tool to unscrew the threaded eyelets and the other was not willing to build the wheel because they were worried the eyelets had seized in the rim and if they try to unscrew and it breaks inside the rim then they wont be able to get it out.

They are not wrong about it seizing, I have done a couple of those wheels and that has happened...I managed to get the bits out after much cursing tho...I have the tools as well as plenty experience, so PM me if you keen...Based in Rivonia.

If the nipples are brass and in good shape and the inserts are seized, just leave the old nipples and replace the spoke.

(This only works if the spoke hasn't broken off at the thread...)

Thats a great idea droo and definitely an option if the inserts are siezed.

Nipples look in good shape but bought some red ones for some pimpage...hahahah

Mavic in all there wisdom keep changing thier nipple design very slightly. I think there 3 different types now.

Worst idea ever. Alu nipples make for a disposable wheelset - they corrode onto the spokes and you won't be able to true them.

Brass nipples all the way.

Oh boy, should have asked the questions before buying the stuffs. Ok, will get some brass nipples based on this advise. Thanks

At least you asked before building... and they're less than 2 bucks a pop, so won't break the bank either.
