cleats and cranks

I've finally gone carbon. (Scott hard tail MTB)

But I didn't buy cleats when I bought the bike, as I already broke the bank by going over budget and was overwhelmed by the choices in cleats. My past bikes I've just gone with the standard middle of the road Shimano cleats.

I need new cleats.

Seen Crank Bros, Shimano, and Look (Which I havn't seen since the 90s as a brand).

What does one look for in a cleat system?

I ride twice a week off road, mainly jeep track and getting into single track.

Please some advice.

Personally I would go for Shimano PDM 520 or 540 pedals. Affordable and bullet proof. They'll last longer than you bike.

But that's just my opinion, am sure you'll get a lot more advice.

Enjoy shopping

This will end up being a personal choice but here goes on some of the issues between Shimano and Crankbrothers (can't talk about Look pedals)

Shimano

- great value for money.

- adjustable tension

- cleats last a lot longer

- generally maintenance free and bomb proof.

- decleating and cleating in mud is a bitch.

Crankbrothers

- expensive.

- requires ongoing maintenance.

- cleats wear quickly.

- very limited adjustment.

- easy to decleat and cleat even in the mud.

- choice between Candys and Eggbeaters depend on whether you want a platform or not.

After all I said I ride with Candy's :whistling:

Crank Bros. - I used to swear by them, but now I dont use them any more. Very light, too much float for my liking (can be adjusted) if you get the clip in wrong say good bye to your shims.

Shimano - Run of the mill, people love them, I haven't used them in years.

Looks - Using them at the moment, absolutely love them. Only issue is when riding in very muddy conditions.

on S tracks?

I can clip in and out in the worst of conditions (No shims/spacers)

Rode XTR's for a few years - great pedals. Fit and forget.

Switched to Crank Bros two years ago and would not switch back if I were given new XTR's

The Shimano's are excellent, I just prefer the float and feel of the CB's

I ride both Candys and Mallets

Good luck. Safe and happy riding
