I don't see any mention of it anywhere else - no comment from RietvleiApparently happened on Friday afternoon.Fortunately not violent but my list of places where I can go ride on my own without being scared of getting attacked for my bike seems to be getting smaller and smaller
Pikey Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I was actually in the rv shop as it had just happened . Apparently they come through the palisade fence just as you are coming out of the 2nd forest section. Often see people walking through there and parts of the forest section. Nearly ran a few of them over walking on the trail,as some of the corners are tight and blind. Need to rethink late afternoon rides by myself ?? Really ! Is it a short cut to swartkoppies road from liefde & Vrede ???
Pikey Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 This is so, so sad Does Wendel know about it? yea I think Wendell's wife called him as it had just happened and graham rushed out the shop to see if they could find them. The lady security guard was telling Mandy what had happened. Am presuming they didn't? Really sad,my wife is banned from riding there alone now. Not worth the risk.
Flippa Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I saw this too. It's sad because I used to use Rietvlei for a quick blast on my own. Not going to take that risk anymore....... I wonder if the farm management will repair the fence? Its been down for ages and I, like Pikey, have nearly run people over walking along the singletrack.
NotSoBigBen Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 On my way back from Thaba yesterday I noticed that the fence has been repaired albeit in places with lower sections than the original fence but still with the spikey things on top. For how long I wonder ........ plan to ride there today, that's just how I roll I guess
AlanD Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Rietvlei is the place I ride almost all the time and always felt safe and comfortable there. Its sad to hear about this mugging as soon there will be nowhere to ride safely. As cyclists we wont be worried about weight anymore as we will have to be armed from cleat to helmut...sad

Pikey Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Landmines.dig big a$$ pits and cover with a light covering with some dirt on,all along the perimeter. Holes should be about 5m deep with spikes at the bottom...and land mines for good measure.

NGUTF Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Wendell replied on FB earlier. They have met with the lady that got hacked and besides fixing the fence there isn't much the cycle shop can do. The hub cycle shop acts as The MTBrs custodian when in the park. Thing is that it's not the bike shops responsibility to fix the fence at the Vlei. Ultimately the land owner should sort this out. Rietvlei is home to two schools (a woman was hijacked outside the girls school two or so weeks ago), restaurants, mini soccer, golf, cross fit etc etc. hey all pay rent and the holes in the fence have been since forever. So the guys in charge of the property have not fixed it. I have informed them of the holes in the fence a few times. We can argue MTBrs use those tracks more but so do casual walkers, family riders and school use it for XC running. It's sad that we're just not safe anywhere anymore unless you're riding with 100 or more people all bunched up with weapons.
