I've always done the, on-the-day option for MTB. All batching info has been sent out, as with the BSC and other road races.

You pitch up, state your name, surname or race number (the SASeeding/ROAG one) and you get your pack with batch sticker, cable ties of the board and the sponsors sticker for the top of your board.

As for road bike numbering. Why not do it like the tri-athletes or world tour riders and get a setup that holds the number on your seat post?

This is great. ASG however does not give the roadies the option to do this.

The guys are saying they should :)

I think they wont as there is a massive inconvenience for their staff, extra costs etc. Lets hope they prove me wrong.

Yip, precisely. There is already a method of doing it all which works.

I fear if they don't, they will be putting the nail in their own coffin. I feel the entry fee is already high enough to allow them to have some staff available on the day.

Agree, this should definitely be an option. Perhaps charge a small "penalty" for those that register the morning of the race to compensate for the extra staff.

I am also sure that if this is an option, that there might be more riders that might participate.

The other good thing they do at MTB events is that they have someone who scans your board when you enter your start batch. So if you were not in the mood to fetch your stickers, they do check if you starting at the correct time and will not let you into the start pound. The guys from Live Time is very good at this.

No one has ever checked if I start in the correct batch at a road event...

That should be incentive enough for them.

As Spinnekop has consistently said, print your own has to be the answer!

And was asked for as far back as 2010 https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/63807-race-number-collections-please-please/page-1

Yet still does not happen and is unlikely to happen!!

I guess if people start not doing races because of the cost for race collection and the inconvenience it becomes then it may change... but am not holding out any hope that it will.

They are very strict on this at the Argus. It will be easier to enter the White House illegally than to enter an earlier group.

maybe they trust the roadies more than the Mountain bikers

You shouldnt trust any cyclist as far as you can throw one of their shaved leg hairs.

If you are always worried about your seeding, you have plenty incentive to not be trustworthy ;)

A bit late to the party, but what a race! Not being on the bike for 2 or so months did take its toll, but still chuffed with my time. The racing was hard in FL, the guys who were seeded wrongly sure took it out on the race. Good day out and thank you ASG!

On the registration topic, I am sure they can make a system similar to the SA Seeding boards work, can't be that difficult.

well .... you have a chip ... its electronic ... why need a number at all  ?

The batch gate just needs a reader to allow you in / and to make sure you finish ...

The MTB does this ... if you dont clock in, they go look for you, since you may be lying in a ditch somewhere ...

If you need a visible number - then it just needs be related to your chip for that photo finish at the end  ...

For timing, absolutely.

For other things a number on the back is needed...

PPA seeding is such a dark art. Last year the Beta was 1.3.

This year it is 0.9. The winning time was quicker so the field wasn't really weaker. The route was the same and there was definitely more wind.

Just saying...

It's ridiculous. PPA says Berge n Dale was just as difficult as the Fast One... Suuuure
