More aggressive tyres for Gauteng

I was going to sugges Knobby Nics - but I see Naas go in in front of me.

My first suggestion though is to check your tire pressures - you need to find an accurate guage and then you can run the RoRo's fairly soft - I run mine between 1.2 and 1.4 - grip is vastly enhanced.

All WTB 29" are R650. Incidentally 27.5" are all R610 :D

Thanx!

I used to refuse to spend more than R800 on my rear motorcycle tyre, and it has about 10 times the amount of rubber....

Now i'm dropping R650 on a mountainbike tyre every 6 months...

how do u manage to run your tires so low. i have a RoRo upfront and an Ikon at the back. i once ran the RoRo just under 1.8. The tyre burped in the ST. anything lower than 1.8 i feel i hit the rocks on the rear. i weigh 76kg on a 29er with syncros wheels TLess ghetto conversion.

Hectic, pressures that low make me rather nervous.

I assume UST rims?

Im running mine at approx. 1.4 according to my pump so in the range i think. I guess their grip is good compared to other similar tires but im prepared to give up a bit of weight for a more beefy tire which is made for dry loose over hard or whatever. I try and avoid mud due to wear and tear in any case these days.

Btw running snakeskin version on wide lightning rims, both snakeskin and the wide rims make it easier to run super low pressures i understand.

What is your guys take on 2.25 WTB Trail Boss, just switched to these for the Tour de Tuli from Spez Fast Tracks.... Haven't had the chance to test them properly, so a bit nervous as to what to expect.

Best pressure to run for sandy conditions 78kg rider.

Like I said - an accurate guage is required....

My parktool pump guage is out by about 0.5 bar at low pressures - so 2.0 bar reading is actually 1.5.... 1.5 reading is 1.0 odd and so on and so forth - made for the odd moment until I figured it out... relying on a pump guage's accuracy is probably a mistake.

I am also in the 65 - 68 kg range - but it never knocks through under normal hits - and I have never burped it either at 1.2 using crest rims - my race partner rides Maxxis crossmarks at even lower pressures on mavic rims - around 1 bar - and he is about your weight.

ZTR crests and WTB something or others... :) neither are UST.

Make sure you have an accurate guage before going low - dont trust your pump guage - I have a topeak digital D2 that I had the calibration checked on in a lab - it's about 0.5 psi out from 100% and it is consistent.

1.4 on my pump guage is not 1.4.... yours may be different, but mine is out.

I agree. You need a decent pressure gauge to check the tyre pressure. 0.5 bar difference at lower pressures could make a BIG difference.

I guess side wall strength of the tyre could also play a factor at low pressures. I know the Rocket Rons on the rear at lower pressures seem to move around on the rim and complain.

Sure does - I actually use it on the Psi setting - easier to use with the smaller increment.

Personally, I am running Vredestein tires.

The Bobcat 2.35wide on the front at about 1.3 to 1.5bar depending on the terrain.

The Black Panther Xtrac 2.2wide on the back normally 0.1 to 0.2bar harder than the front.

Loads of grip, specially the front as it is very aggressive...but not for the weight weenies... they not the lightest.

Seems Schwalbe is always loads heavier than advertised ... where Spez is normally less.

I'm a bit of a weight weenie, but can afford to give up 200g on a more grippy front tire forsure.

Will probably decide between the Ibex and the new Nobby Nic.

Not sure about the new Nobby nic but the old one is very pressure sensitive and does not like low pressures.
