Hacc Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Welcome back Ferret, can't believe it is 100 days already! You are a true inspiration to me to start with my proper training and to stop messing around. (I am not injured, just seriously lacking some motivation) Good luck with the London marathon, hope you heal up soon and you gain your fitness levels quickly. Maybe you should decide closer to London marathon if Comrades is on the cards? Substitutions start 1st of April. Don't chase time, run with us slower lot Ferret69 1

Anybody used them before and maybe have some knowledge of them ? Not going to be doing the comrades , just working towards a half marathon for now. Edited January 11, 2017 by Khronis
Andrew Steer Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Great job on the rehab Ferret... impressive stuff. I've no doubt you'll be ready for London Marathon. Comrades can wait, no need to rush back for the madness. I didn't have a great Dec training wise, was solid til around the 16th, but health issues pretty much ruined the rest of 2016. Managed to keep the weight in check though at least which is a minor +. Going okay this year so far and primed for Dischem 21km this weekend - so looking to kick on from here and have some good months heading towards the big C. Johnsons Crane Marathon at the end of the month the next big goal - want to get my wife qualified and nudge up my seeding a bit too. Healing vibes to those injured at the moment Safe running gents Ferret69 1

Healing vibes to those injured at the moment Safe running gents Good luck with Dischem Andrew. One of my favorite 21 races, but it is just too busy. Parking is a problem and the traffic a nightmare. Johnson Crane is also my first marathon for the year. I hope to improve my marathon time as well. Don't want to stress about it, it depends how you feel on the day. How is Ottosdal compared to Johnson Crane? Andrew Steer 1
Andrew Steer Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Good luck with Dischem Andrew. Yeah, Dischem is really popular... but I just go earlier for the more popular the event. Also use google maps to get in, it usually takes you around the heavy traffic. Always keen to get into the 21kms early, find them great for training. Haven't done Ottosdal I'm afraid... Johnsons is pretty darn flat though, long slight drags if anything, but it's nice and quick.
IceCreamMan Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Also doing Dischem and after my first one a number of years ago I vowed never to use the car to the start. Its mayhem. Use the motorbike now which allows me to sleet til 4:30 and still make the start comfortably. Johnson crane hire was also hectic traffic wise last year so booked in at the SUN1 for the Saturday night. Means I can sleep til 5 and amble up to the start which is about 700 metres away. Traffic to some of these events is a real ballache so much so that it will prevent me from doing some races in the future. Organisers must make a plan, maybe park and shuttle services or something. Jackes Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 (edited) How is Ottosdal I will be finding out this year... Apparently a very likeable, not tough race, only heard good things about going there for the weekend. The long run that day of time might be strange to me for one, hav'nt done such a long distance that time of day before, we normally run in the dark, but in the am's. We may end up doind only the 21 it seems, with my wife's "feet" setback. We will know within the next few weeks, but I'm not going to rush or risk anything. Comrades is only in June and that is the target. It will adjust the training a bit though, but the next marker will be a 52km's on 25/02 then. https://www.strava.com/activities/4334663 http://www.ottosdaldrafentrap.co.za/images/map2.jpg Edited January 11, 2017 by Jackes
Hacc Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 "If you've had a bit of a lazy December, be patient and build up slowly. The Comrades isn't won in January" - Lindsey Parry Saw this yesterday and felt better about my fitness levels. I heard the experienced runners used to run Ottosdal in the evening and then drive back to run Johnson's the next morning! Absolutely crazy, I know. Johnson's was my first ever marathon, so I feel some sort of obligation to run it. I have also only heard good things about Ottosdal (except that it can be very humid and hot). Well, Johnson's is not much better weather wise. It seems that race organizers take more entries but the number of parking areas stays the same. Lexx 1
ScottCM Posted January 11, 2017 Author Posted January 11, 2017 Thanks Scott.. your a Champ... Yep 100 Days later.. longest 14 weeks of my life.. Spent the first 10 on full crutches, week 11 was down to 1 Crutch and the last 3 I've slowly progressed from walking just a few 100m , to slowly adding a few slow jogs, to now as Scott says up to a 5km Jog. Had my Final app with the Surgeon yesterday and after a last set of xrays I got the Good to go to get back to Gym (cos my leg has disappeared) Running and Some Cycling (if I wanna brave the roads so maybe Watt Biking). He says Femur is at 100% and I can get the 5 Screws and Plates out on the 8th March.. so that will be nice too. Now the next 15 weeks starts trying to get myself back to a level of strength and fitness to keep to my promise of Jogging London Marathon with the wife on 23rd April. 21 weeks to Comrades is sooooo tempting.... I had written it Off but may be possible if i accept it will be a slower oneWhat about skipping comrades this year and doing the IM70.3 in Durban 2 weeks later. You have already been in the pool trying to keep your fitness up. Surely the cross training between swimming, watt biking and far less running will be better for your leg this soon after the accident?
Ferret69 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 What about skipping comrades this year and doing the IM70.3 in Durban 2 weeks later. You have already been in the pool trying to keep your fitness up. Surely the cross training between swimming, watt biking and far less running will be better for your leg this soon after the accident? Yeah that is very much a Consideration right now.. haven't done an Ironman or 70.3 since 2013 and been itching to go back. And as Its so Close to Comrades I always thought the Durban one would not be possible.. I think by the end of Feb I should have a good idea of Progress and will then make a call. I love the Comrades and this would be my 5th but the chances ill line up this year are very very Slim...... I didn't do 15 weeks of Physio 3x a Week/Swimming/Rehab/Theraband sessions/ hire a Recover4u Compression machine for 3 months etc etc etc to cock it up now with being too rash... And getting in shape for a Fast 21km will be a lot easier than a slow 90km. ScottCM 1
Ferret69 Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 My petty little plantar injury seems so insignificant now! As an Athlete any injury that keeps you off the Roads for any period of time is significant in my opinion.... Stretch 1

Andrew Steer Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Stretch, how's the foot after that little treadmill tester? What Comrades training programs are you guys all following... if at all?
Stretch Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 Stretch, how's the foot after that little treadmill tester? no change...so no damage was done it is improving daily - they say that the inflammation takes 3 to 6 weeks to go down and Sunday will be 3 weeks...so i think all is on course and I will slowly get back into and hopefully be up to full running again by end of Jan. Good thing is that it does not look like much fitness has been lost Fruity, candz1 and Andrew Steer 3

What Comrades training programs are you guys all following... if at all?I am actually using a coach, his name is Chris Bruwer. Pretty awesome and tuff program. Because this is my first comrades after a Hiatus of about 5-6 years, i don't have any big goals, just a 8h Comrades or under 8H30min. Andrew Steer 1

Do you see the coach often or do you give feedback over email? I only recently decided that I want to get a coach for my 2018 Comrades. Lexx 1
