I'm forever tempted by Altra's so if you got them I'd love to hear how its going.

We were trail running once and I was wearing my Superiors - a first timer in the group also wearing Altra said her brother refers to them as the crocs of running! That says it all... they are just comfortable.

 

I suppose it's not cool to say I am wearing my Altra Instincts (which is past their running days) at the office currently!  :blush:  :whistling:

KPMG Running club closes down

 

Seems like KPMG is joining the Old Mutual club. Very sad indeed for some of the elite athletes.

I guess if you want a proper sponsor or two you have to get out of this country.

Howzit all, hope you all are good! 

 

wow its been a while since I've been on here. But, glad to be back nonetheless. I injured myself a bit in April (pulled hamstring badly, slight tear) as I was building up to my first 21km race. So i was out for 6 weeks. by then, it was winter and I just didn't bother anymore. However, it is time I start over again, but this time I want to do it properly, without injuries (if I can help it). My current base is practically non-existent, other than Parkrun on a Saturday ( I manage a time of 30:00 on average). Please help me? I need some tips in building a solid training plan/foundation/routine to get back into running, but I need your expert advice as I do not want to injure myself again. I would greatly appreciate any help.

 

also, I need a "good enough for me" pair of new running shoes. However, current finances do not allow for me to be spending thousands. Suggestions?

 

Thanks guys. hopefully this time I stick around for much longer...

Welcome back.

 

The 10% rule is critical. Don't increase by more than 10% week on week. Also start slowly. Don't run every day and try speed work until you have a solid month or two behind you.

 

Shoes.. You gonna pay.... But if your are unsure then do for the slightly heavier models. I.e inthe ASICS range..the gt1000 instead of the cumulus or gt2000. There's also Mr price brand and Sketchers.. Just not sure of the longevity.. But those Mr price ones for selling for like 150 bucks or something stupid not to long ago

Hard training and stressed and busy work lost had left me with a head cold. Woke up this morning to do my run and climbed straight back into bed. First run I've missed in a while.. But.... Listen to your body....

Welcome back.

What i never understood about the 10% run is the starting point. Should it be 1km, 3km, 5km or 10km?

Person A has a base of 500km over 3 months before injury takes them out for 8 weeks. What is the starting mileage they should aim for?

 

Person B has 500km over 6 months?

 

Person C has 500km over 12 months?

Take where you were per week before injury and knock it back by 50 -75% depending on how good or bad your feel and then go from there

I am between an 11 and a 13 dependant on make.

 

And to all others, thanks for the feedback. Any suggested sources I can look out for, for research?

Geez, those are flippers! I tend to retire my shoes quite early these days out of paranoia (often at just around 500km instead of the average 800km) and mostly send them down to my dad in KZN who gets a conveyor belt of my used shoes, especially during Comrades buildup. If you were a 10,5 I'd have been able to send you some Saucony Rides to test drive for 300km. 

 

As for returning from injury; as everyone says, the 10% rule is pretty golden. When coming back from my ITB recently I erred on the side of caution by starting with 900m runs followed by 100m walks for 4km total. It sounds frustratingly small but it's a bit like compounding interest and before you know it your mileage has grown back to its old levels or higher.

 

In terms of shoe research, I highly recommend runrepeat.com and The Ginger Runner on Youtube for some great quality, unbiased reviews.

Can any of you recommend a decent waterproof but relatively lightweight running jacket?

 

I mailed the Skyrun guys and they responded that it needs to be a minimum of 5,000mm waterproof. Bizzarely, K-Way, who sponsors the event, only has a 3,000mm jacket. I know there's the Salomon Bonati but it comes with a pretty hefty price tag.

Thanks very very much for the info![emoji4] really appreciate the knowledge shared. They are indeed flippers! So I struggle with some brands in terms of stock. I have done an analysis of my running and have been told I probate with running, so I need some what of a stability shoe. Will shop around.
