Sugar Free

Actually, no. LMGTFY:

"Sucrose is a disaccharide sugar comprised of fructose and glucose in a 1:1 ratio. It's perhaps the most familiar of the sugars, since sucrose is also known as table sugar."

It's the fructose that is bad for you, except during or just after a ride (yay!) and except when it is eaten in the presence of natural fibres e.g. in raw fruit.

Read Dr. Robert Lustig (Fat Chance: The Hidden Truth About Sugar).

Thanks...i had it the wrong way round.

Just be careful of Aspartame (artificial sweetner) in suger-free products, the jury is out as to whether its any better for you than sugar. Google it and read some horror stories as well

That study that Capricorn alluded to earlier - sweeteners are no better than sugar, and fire the same receptors, essentially mimicking the effect that sugar has and causing weight gain. In a nutshell.

I need to read it again to give you a more in depth synopsis, but in essence, ANY sweetener (whether sugar, artificial sweetener etc) when added to a food type or drink, is bad.

I'm also cutting sugar and bread from today. I've done well doing this in the past and in a weird way I'm looking forward to it. Roll on W2W. With just over 9 weeks to go, I plan to lose 9kgs at 1kg a week.

my typical daily menu:

B/fast - tomato and mushrooms fried in coconut oil and butter with 2 scrambled eggs.

morning snack - Macadamias, biltong

lunch - salad with avo, tomato, cucumber, feta chicken, chilies and olive oil

afternoon - double cream yoghurt with some strawberries

dinner - some sort of protein with steam veg ( after steaming fry veg in butter)

If I'm going to be cycling I'll have carbs for dinner the night before and for b/fast and on the ride if it is long enough. Not fussy what carbs, anything will do.

you would think so, but i genuinely feel much better eating like this.

When i first started, i was always cranky and hungry. but as i adjusted and my stomach shrank back to what it should, this actually satiates me completely.

you dont even want to know how much food i used to eat....

where do you get your energy from to exercise? you've got no fat AND no carbs.

well, perhaps this will inspire you...

My menu today contains :

Breakfast

1 x espresso (single) no sweetener

1 x 150g yoghurt (homemade)

1x scrambled egg

Snack

1/2 cucumber

Lunch

1 x home cooked portion prawns

1 x salad

Afternoon snack

other half of cucumber and 1 x grilled chicken breast

I dont eat dinner

Flip no way! I will never be able to survive on so little.

I will add more fruit and veg for sure. Mash up chicken and brocoli and or more eggs or snack on biltong.

I started today the no sugar and no carb thing too, I might fail with pizza or Simply asia once a week, but I think I can do this.

Hey Wayne & other posters. Many thanks for this thread!

Perfect timing as I've started the no sugar/no bread diet as of today...... and now have added motivation.

One question; is honey allowed?

I'm all for eating healthy. Many of the so called diets and "no sugar" is mostly common sense really. I guess the "sugar" film has made a serious impact on the way people think about food! That's very positive!

If you want to drop weight, eliminate sugar + reduce carbs and exercise...no NEW science here.

Your prescribed meals above seems to be close to zero carbs and sugar. No doubt this will work!

I do like the idea of no dinner, but for me that's near impossible to fathom!

What's impressive for me is your and family's lifestyle transformation around food. Now that's not easy to do over a long period. Nice work!

One of my favourite things has become cottage pie, but using cauliflower mash instead of potato.

this is awesome. Done it before as well. Needs quite a bit of butter to make it creamy enough, and more salt and pepper than traditional mashed taters, but it tastes awesome. Just don't add milk. If you want to put less butter in, or prefer it "whiter" then add a bit of cream.

Lovely.

I generally do mine with sweet basil, garlic and butter.. Also bloody good!

this is a serious challenge for me to take on... or maybe not. I don't have sugar in my coffee, don't drink any juices or soft drinks, and 95% of my meals are home cooked and have no sugar in them.

but I love a block or 2 of chocolate every now and then... that's my biggest downfall.

the no bread challenge is an easy 1 for me, so let me do this !!
