Two words of advice

Don't !!!

They operate on the element of surprise.

They will take your bike.

And they will take your fire-arm.

Hope you do not get shot with it.

I survived an attempted car-jack two weeks ago - I'm still trying to figure out what happened and there would have been NO chance of using a fire-arm if I had one - SURPRISE!!!

A ,25 in the hand is worth more than a ,45 in the Safe.......

A large and heavy handgun is just too impractical to carry whilst riding on a regular basis. A ,25 (6,35mm) pistol like a Taurus PT51 or a Beretta 650 is ideal.

The pistol is small and compact and easy to carry and conceal. They both have very safe carry capabilities and one can carry  it  with a round in the chamber at all times with the half cock hammer position aswell as on safety (ie 2 safeties in operation). Other 6,35's like the Baby Browning are no good as they are prone to jamming and the grip is miniscule making it very difficult to handle when firing..

The hollow point ,25/6,35mm ammo one gets these days together with a 7 or 8 round magazine should be more than adequate to protect yourself or others against for example 2 knife wielding assailants. Winchester Silver Tip hollow points are ideal.

Just make sure before the time that the hollow points feed consistently 100% of the time as they are tested with normal steel round nose ammo in the factory. A gunsmith can polish the ramp to accommodate regular and reliable feeding.

Firstly, to everyone who objects to carrying a firearm while out cycling, I put to follow to you. You and your beloved wife or girlfriend are out enjoying the scenery on the bike, suddenly 2 nice young men jump infront of you and ask you politely if they may please have all of your belongings and have intercourse with your wife. You, not being a millionaire and your wife not a hooker tell then that you would prefer it if they did not take everything as well as your wife. Do you think they are just going to say, OK thats fine we TOTALLY understand, sorry for breaking your momentum? What are you planning to do when someone starts attacking you and makes you watch while they do unspeakable things to your loved ones? Surely you are not going to just sit there, you will do everything in your power to stop the attack. Not the bad guys have a gun and you only have your will power, which to you thing will win? I want the means to protect myself and my loved ones, and it turns out the most effective way of doing so is with a gun. I get that they work with the element of surprise and that you may not have enough time, but that is why you train with your firearm. Why do you wear a seat belt? Because the odds are when you are in a car crash it will save your life, but there have been lots of incidents where if they were not wearing one they would have survived. You are WAY more likely to use your firearm successfully. But that is just my way of thinking, if you are happy to just roll over and get killed, or to try and punch a guy welding a firearm, well that is your choice and your constitutional right, BUT so is my choice not to do so.

As for concealing a firearm while cycling, wear a cycling shirt, they are always full off cycling related goodies, so a little bulge on your back wont look suspicious. Appendix carry might also work, but that depends on your body tipe, ride position and size of the firearm. I would not use a chest strap, if you fall it will hurt ALOT, but mainly your access to it is very restricted. I use a kydex holster with a 9mm Glock 19 and a CR Speed belt, carried at 4o'clock, with an extra mag weak side(exactly the same way that I carry every day). I wont lie, it is not comfortable and I would prefer not even owning a firearm (for self defense), but I would prefer our president to have matric as well.

Do not thing that you will stop a lethal attack with a non lethal weapon (pepper spray, batton ect.), but something is better than nothing, I would just not prefer making my attacker more angry by spraying him with pepper spray.

When an attack occurs, separate yourself for the object of desire, and when the object of desire is you or your wife, well then let it rain.

Lastly, to everyone who says you will not be able to draw fast enough when you are out of breath bla bla bla, just because YOU are not able to do something does not mean I am also not able to do it.

Welcome to PM me for more information.

Really sorry to hear, that must be one shity experience and glad that you are able to tell the tale. But please keep in mind that there are lots of ways to better your ods in situations like this. There have been numerous occasions where people successful used their firearm in that particular situation. I am not willing to hope that this criminal has any regard for my life. Also please don't take this as an insult and me saying shooting is ALWAYS the way to go, I am not, there are plenty of situations where when you just cooperate you will be fine, I do not own and carry a firearm to protect my eartly belongings.

It does not work like that

By the time you have figured out what to do after having a baseball bat slammed into your face it is to late and you will be staring down the barrel of your own gun.Where did the bat come from - it was in the hands of some punk standing behind the pillar of a bridge waiting for you.

This actually happened a while ago in the Stellenbosch area - no the cyclist did not have a fire-arm - luckely.

Or they drive past you in a bakkie and the guy on the back pushes you over into the pavement - no time to draw a gun - you did not even see them coming.

My own story in the car - I would have been stabbed in the neck on the right side rendering my right arm useless - what got my adrenalin flowing for the rest of the day was the realization that there was absolutely nothing I could have done - a locked door saved me and he could not break the glass.

I totally understand what you are saying, BUT I know a guy that was shot thru his liver, BY SURPRISE and he still managed to draw his firearm and by doing so saved his wife, 2 daughters and sister in law. I understand that they are totally capable of rendering you useless before you even realise that something is about to go down, but remember that the human body is much tougher that you thing in a survival situation and also remember not all attacks are equal.

An important thing to realise is that owning and carrying a firearm is not a hobby or something that I do for fun (its not fun) or do occasionally, it is a way of life.

What I find amazing, is the lack of good holsters in SA shops...

If you want something decent, you have to take a leap of faith, and import.

In winter, on the Highveld, its easy to carry concealed. In summer, its a bit of a challenge.

On the bike, I reckon its easy to disguise, as my riding partners will often ask if I am carrying. 2 of the guys are ex SAPS, so you would think they know a little about a gun's outline.

You will never know how its going to go down, but my plan is to start empting my pockets of valuables - phone / wallet / repair kit & creating distance, whilst showing a high level of co-operation & at some point the handgun will make an appearance, if the intent to do physical harm is there. I say plan, as without one, you shouldn't be carrying.

Stay safe.

I have been looking into getting my license to carry and the lack of decent holsters have made me concerned. There are a few around but nothing great.
