Spoke to him today. He has everything he needs for the build, and will do it over the weekend. I'll post pics once I get some from him. The wait, man. I tell you, it's killing me. I'm driving my wife nuts.

The wait is by your own fault, you went about this all wrong.

Instead of building one bike that has all the basic features (single speed, cable disc brakes, rigid fork) to have reliability because you live in the gatkant of nowhere, you should've opted for N+maaaany!

If one bike gives you k@k,just leave it in a corner and take another one. Continue in this fashion until none of the bikes run anymore and then go visit civilization for repairs! [emoji48] [emoji23]

And, now after your Tranquilitas ride . . .

How does she go?

Ride feel compared to the aluminium frame?

Give a little report.

Also share more about that saddle of yours  please.

Looks like the thing my SS  needs.

I second that.... we need a ride report:

1. gearing

2. single speed

3. the steel frame

come on...

Lovely build sir, well deserved.

Gearing is currently 32x20. I almost killed myself on the first climb out of town, as I was trying to ride it like a geared bike. Big mistake. Can you say "lactic acid attack?" For a fleeting moment I panicked and thought I was insane for going SS. This was at the top of the climb. The road leveled off, and I had a bit of time to think about just WTF I was doing. My mistakes dawned on me, and I knew I had to search for my sweet spot when standing up out of the saddle in the climb.

So, having put the first climb behind me, I experimented on the second climb until I found my sweet "out of the saddle" spot and it went much better. Past Tegwaan farm it got even better still, and I was now getting the hang of it, pacing myself out of the saddle, cranking up the hill past the rubbish dumb. I was learning a lot in a short period of time, basically being forced to get rid of my geared riding habits or die. I opted for the former.

There is a significant difference between the steel and alu frames. The steel frame most definitely makes for a more comfortable ride, no question. The geometry on the STR is also much more comfortable for me. Very happy I got this frame.

Re. the saddle - it is a Brooks B-17 Narrow. I won't change it for anything. Before I had that, I had a SDG Belair. A very nice saddle, but once you hit 50km on that, your arse is hating you, and letting you know it. With the Brooks I ride comfortably to Dullstroom and back (110km round trip) without as much as a complaint from my behind.

SS is a complete departure from everything that cycling has taught you. It forces you to slow down and relax.... in my view, this is why it looks so graceful, your movement has purpose and your energy is focussed on what you are trying to achieve...

That's exactly it - "your movement has purpose and your energy is focused on what you are trying to achieve..." - I had to seriously slow down (cadence/movement, not speed!... I was going faster uphill compared to when I still had (many) gears).... and relax. Once the light went on, it turned from disillusionment to pure fun.

First ride was 35km in total. This weekend I will be putting some seriaas miles on this thing. Anyone up for lunch in Dullstroom?

You'r  build and feedback is providing good gumption for my new SS build.

Just need to decided some build details, get some more parts as the cash-flow  permit

and  then I can start posting.

Sorry for the hijack.

Enjoy your SS weekend!

This whole thread characterises all that is best about the Hub.

Good questions, good debate, good advice, good feedback, generous offers of donated kit, some chirping and no trolling.

It even inspired me to go out and ride my SS on Wednesday.

Thanks for starting it Henningvr
