Yip, incredible...getting 30 minutes of coverage at 22:30 only. Do not know the reasons but it almost seems like SS not really that interested unless money is an issue? Or is the answer rather in live streaming?

30 minutes?  More like 10 minutes.  10 minutes adds, 5 minutes about previous day, 5 minutes about background on the sponsors and farms where they overnight, and 10 minutes of the actual day's race.

Live feed of finish on Epic site

Yes Scotty . But I just thought that us locals maybe deserve something better on television. An hour in the evening maybe during a more civilised time ? We get all the big European road races live. But with a a race of this magnitude in our backyard we get 30 minutes after bedtime. I don't think it's right.

I Thought that by now  extensive TV coverage would almost be a given.

Real problem is you will not have racing like they had at Paris Nice, now that was some damn fine racing!

and jeez that prologue coverage was excruciating. interview after interview with the shlebs and other arb people. would love to see more of the joe soap riders on the Hoogekraal single track.

To be fair I think the coverage is in line with the Dakar race which probably has similar logistical issues. I would love to see more, but maybe the cost is just too high to warrant a return.

Live coverage... ah yes! its the same covering a race live in the mountains in Tulbagh with the field spread. 12 minutes between 1 and 10 is very difficult to cover with a mobile camera. Road races at least have full road closure and bikes can track backward and forward to cover the 1 or 2 breaks from the peloton. So now we have to deal with recorded footage for the evening package that only rolls in after the ladies come in this afternoon. I promise you that they are editing at full tilt with what they have already to have it all available for the inserts of advertisements (to pay for the airtime), voice overs etc. by 7pm tonight. Think of it as at least 3 races that needs to be filmed and edited simultaniously (men, ladies and mixed) with a few sub-plots that also need some coverage (masters, grand masters, development, african jersey, development jersey). The production team at Supersport then have to get the voice-overs in, tweak the final production and get it all out by 10am so that everything can be loaded into the broadcasting feed by 22:30.

A grand tour is much simpler. Your producer switches to the live action with perhaps pre-recorded inserts of action at another point (say they cover the break and there is a crash in the main peloton, they cut to a recorded version). The footage is therefor mostly in chronological order by the time they need to edit the highlights package and the main action bits would have been flagged as well, so the job is then to eliminate unwanted flags until you have your 30 minutes highlights package.

I am by no means proficient in production and editing of these events, but its clear that covering a rugby game is much cheaper and simpler.

If the tracker is to be believed it looks like Team Spur has been caught and passed by Team Ascendis after leading for most of the day. That cannot be good for their confidence.
