Shock horror

Have to agree with GLuvsMtb.

What the LBS and Scott have in terms of procedures, should in no way affect the client/end user.

They should make good, regardless, and then take it up with their client, the LBS.

I no longer have time for these companies & brands, who do their best to avoid responsibility.

The OP made 2 mistakes IMO: Scott & DT Swiss...

3 Years back I was warned not to buy a Scott DS because of the DT Swiss.....sounds like they have an dubious reputation?

Let me just clarify: there was nothing wrong with my DT Swiss shock before the LBS "serviced" it. I've had nothing but happiness from my Scott Spark 920 and hassle free riding since buying it in Jan 2014.

So I dont think it fair to blame the part. Also, the LBS I went to...they are not a Scott authorised dealer, I did know this and chose them over another approved dealer in the area, so my own fault.

Will update when I hear back from the shop. Collecting a loan bike now for the week so at least they are sorting me out for wheels :)

Same happened with my sister in laws DT swiss. Maybe its a valving issue that causes a fault once its pulled apart?

Hope you come right. We shouted and complained and our LBS and Scott sorted out our problem (albeit after 4 attempts).

Good Luck.

2 years and you didn't service it. Well right there you are winning. I would hate to see the state of your car. Why did you take it in if everything was working so well? You are my friend but your story holds no water.

Hmm best you shush on this one since which shop do  you think did this!

Ding ding, seconds out...

How local is the local in LBS?

then what does BS stand for then? I would prefer it if the thread title was shock shock horror, but that's my only gripe

There are lots of LBS who have mechanics at the back who know the basics on how to build, fix, or service a bike... But, how many of them actually ride bikes? That's what concerns me the most... do they even know what to look for or do they simply just follow a rule book?! A good mechanic can ride or just look at the bike and based on his/her riding experience can single out a problem in no time.

I now only trust myself with my bike. If i don't know something, i learn through online manuals or you tube. But yeah i do understand that some people don't have the time to work on their bikes.

LBS need to hire the right people for the job, ITS STARTS WITH THEM!! That being said, good and experienced bike mechanics are hard to find... Rather find the right person, pay them well, and the shop will earn a good rep.

As a aside comment

This is all well an good but these higher calibre people cost money and makes the service more expensive something we often baulk at.

So like components -  Fast , effective or cheap ?  choose two !

I think that there is a better option

Most cycle shop owners become retailers and get others to do the dirty work. Fortunately there are a few shops in my vicinity where the owner does the work himself; these are the shops I will support.

Anton at Summit, Mike at Mike's Bikes, Grant at Sprocket and Jack or Robodog at the Trailhead are good places to start.

You can buy boerewors at R15kg, but I am sure you will not want to know what is inside.

Similarly, you can buy a bike service on price, but don't then complain when it is not up to the standard of a craftsman.

Most of us are close friends. If you are a problem customer, word gets around too. :D

There was even a case of a guy with a bike at S&J who was trashing our name. Turns out we don't know him and his fairly rare bike has never been in our shop.

This too...people within the industry talk, and although in business we may be working at "opposing" shops we are all (or mostly) friends who can have a good chat outside of hours or even go riding together...

We even help each other with out of stock parts and advice on bike problems...
