Hey welcome here.. tell you what the Munga had us all glued to our devices following the live timing.. and yes there was even cheering at the screen. (And some very late nights )

Thanks guys! Yes, in the states they call them 'blue dot junkies'. Cant recall what colour our dots were though?!

Hey folks. So Slowbee convinced me to get involved in this thread I guess for two reasons; 1. So you've heard it from the horses mouth! and 2. As an opportunity to answer and discuss key race related topics where i may be able to add some value! I just wish i could race the thing!

Good luck!!

Alex

Great to see Alex and Ztangi contributing here.

At the risk of repeating myself, I dont believe there is a better forum locally for valuable input than the hub. Especially in the run up to events and then for sharing thoughts while the event is on.

Every event organiser's nightmare is a thread turned bad with trolls and stirrers - but I think in as far as the Munga and FC have created a community of goodwill, you can be assured that community will boot any negative or destructive posts quite quickly - people are really interested in real stuff which both events have in spades.

(even the Epic eventually dropped their own hosted forum in favour of the hub)

I cant agree with Tubed more.... the FC thread is amazing and the riders share advice and thoughts freely and with encouragement.

Great to see an organiser on the Hub in his own event's thread. Now that is commitment. Respect to you sir.

Then event had a great tracker. It kept us in suspense and had us guessing. For this event to really get legs, the story needs to be told somehow. When Usher's tummy imploded on him we were sitting at our computer screens trying to work out what happened instead of having the situation relayed to us by a race correspondentIt was like trying to follow the cricket on supersport's website opposed to ball by ball commentary on espncricinfo. The other challenge is that the moves typically happen in the early hours of the morning, unless someone falls ill. You sit and track the riders all day and everyone more or less keeps position, you track further from the dinner table and during family time, status quo is being maintained. You go to bed and by 6am the next morning everything changed and you have no idea what exactly happened.

Yes for sure, you make a valid point! The complexities are compounded of course by the nature of the race spreading the field far and wide across the remote Karoo. To be honest though, we had no idea just how captivating the tracking would be and how well received it was. We are definitely thinking about simple ways to engage the fans back home, even if its 3 in the morning!

Hmmm...tough one. Depends on the type of training. If you spend 20 to 30 hours a week on the bike, for sure you will lose weight. My strategy is to always go in with a bit extra. My observation is the super skinny types seem to be more susceptible to the odd bug as the race grinds you down. Im comparing a typical road pro to guys like Matthew Lee, Jay Petervary, Jefe Branham....these latter guys all carry a wee bit more and seem to prevail in the MTB ultra endurance events. But, how do you put on a bit extra? I believe the best way is muscle with functional strength training in the gym. Not something that a lot of riders do.

Also, there is no short answer to this question as it is quite controversial with many opinions on the subject. Bear in mind that this is still a 'short' race compared to the FC or Tour Divide. So you have a good chance of making the end before you blow or waste away.

Good luck!

Just completed the entry form. Let the games begin!  :w00t:

Congrats Henning! Actually you guys are in a much better place from a training perspective as last year I think we only opened up the race in August. Now you have way more time to prep as well as the group that did the first race. They will undoubtably be your best repository of information!
