Seized pedals on Shimano cranks

Hi Guys

My shimano 105 carbon pedals are for some reason seized to the crank arms. i have broken 3 allen wrenches trying to get them free and the local bike shop in Durban advised there is nothing i can do as the the crank arms are hollow and heat may cause them to warp . The heads on the pedals are still good and the tools catch well. I can't understand how this would happen as its ever-dent copper slip was used when i installed it 6 months ago.

Needless to say i also made sure we where opening them in the correct direction .

Any ideas?

Have you tried to put the Allen key in and hit it with a hammer? I did this to take off my older mtb pedals that were also seized.

I've also bent 2 Allen keys trying to take it off my hand. After the hit the Allen with a hammer it came loose.

I fear that more leverage would just bend more Allen keys.

I think you should go buy an expensive allenkey like parktool and try again with a lot more leverage . When it comes to tools you really get what you pay for.

I broke a park tool . :(  Im thinking maybe i should vice it and try a torque wrench , may offer less tension to the head of the allen socket.

use the pipe method and jam the pedals inbetween two bricks in your wall to get optimum leaverage , then slowly increase presure until it feels like its going to break off ,ease up aplly some lube (NOT Q20 or squirt ) purple extreame or muc-off work realy well

repeat ,this metod is easy on the threads , which is most important in the big picture

BTW 98% of cracks skrew the pedals out in the opposite direction of which yo peddle but you can check for sure on the website

Hope this helps , good luck

Then I don't know. I twisted a few cheap allenkeys before but an expensive one solved the problem. I think the best option is to drill out the pedal.

A decent 1/2" air wrench ( We use a King Tony) should do the job. We had the same problem and even with a  proper power bar had no success. I reiterate "decent" - an Adendorf Special or an old worn out one is not going to do the job.

Air wrenches can be good because of the hammering action. Might just do the trick.
