Guys go and speak to cyclists that have been hijacked.....first thing they all say ""it happened so fast"

How are you going to get your gun out from under your shirt while riding??

How will you drawn it if you laying on your back?

As much as I would like to agree with you I cant!!! They hit me off my bike took my back pack then decided to steal my bike, just a knife the throat. They never searched me & walked away with their backs toward me, rather arrogant I might add!!! It would have been lovely to fire a warning shot and watch how they soil their rods!!!

Opposite experience to what I had, after pinning me to the ground then stunning me by lobbing a paving stone at my head they searched me demanding to know where my gun was and searched around a bit on the track thinking i might have hidden it.

That was mostly what people that i spoke to said to.In many cases their clothes were taken to give perps time to get away.

Bike jackings are very different to car hijackings so it's difficult to draw up a training curriculum.

I think i am rather just gona get an indoor trainer and mount an LMG on the trainer...brick up 3 sides and only have one entrance and face the trainer to the entrance... It sounds like it is getting toooo dangerous to venture out the high walls and electric fencing. At one stage i thought i should move to the cape but it sounds like it is worse than Durban :(

maybe i should apply to ORANIA it sounds like life is sweet there.

I hate the idea of having to give in to these guys, but I do feel that if 10% of cyclists started carrying guns the number of bike jackings would increase, and they would become more violent.

Arm yourself or don't, carry a knife and train by stabbing sheep/pigs or whatever floats your boat. In the end one will have to live with the choices you make, what ever they are...

Flame suit on. I carry a gun, well trained to use it.

1. never ride alone.

2. safety in numbers.

3. I agree that you wont be able to do anything once you have been pushed/shoved or any other means used to get you off the bike. You normally end up breaking a colar bone when taking a dive.

4. Refer to 1 and 2.

5. its for the protection of my person and property, and those that cycle withus.

6. it came in handy on Sunday morning whilst been confronted by 3 drunk white guys in a Amarok. They were wrong, and TUNED me that they are 3 and I am alone. The lady with me didn`t count. The one coward in the back of the double cab remarked that I only have one arm to fight them, on which I replied that the other is on my 13 other friends. They knew what I was talking about and ducked. At that time 2 roadies stopped and told me that the Amarok nearly took them out as well.

Yes its not the ideal weapon to carry on a bike, LIVE IS TOUGH AND THIS IS AFRICA.

THEY ALREADY ARE VIOLENT. Not shouting at you, just stating a fact. Read todays Burger. Teacher in ICU after he was attacked and his head was smahed with a brick. Colar bone broken on several places. Jip he was cycling alone and I dont think the fact that any means of protection would`ve helped him.

True and my choice is defend my self , my property and my family . I will not loose a minutes sleep because I shot and hopefully killed a criminal .

But if you don't know what the front end of a gun is or how to use a knife then rather just carry pepper spray .

I'm not insinuating that there aren't any violent bike jackings. however most cases you read/hear about are being pushed off your bike and the thief taking your bike.

Now to quote Scotty

When these guys start hearing that there's a 10 or 20 percent chance of getting a bike AND a gun, incidents will rise. So more people start to carry guns. This thread has debated at length (and seem to all be in agreement) that if you are carrying you need to be well trained, alert etc. and that the assailant will always have the strategic advantage. So now that there are more guns involved the following will result: a) the rider manages to get a few shots off (regardless of where they go), or b) the assailant gains a firearm.

In the case of b), go back to the beginning and read again.

In the case of a), i) nobody dies or ii) the assailant dies or iii) the riding buddy dies.

i) "Great! / Damn I didn't get him!" (depending on who you are), the escaped assailant now makes sure that next time he goes bikejacking, he has a gun (Let's be honest here.... he's not going to stop cos you took a shot at him). so we go back to the beginning with a greater chance of landing up at b).

ii)"Great / ooohhh F, what now?" (depending on who you are). We've seen that often there is more than one bike jacker. So now the escaped bike jacker makes sure that as per i), he has a gun next time.

iii)"oooohhh F, what now?". You explain to your buddy's family that you killed him while riding. Feek *** about it. Escaped assailants make sure that as per i), they have a gun next time.

So I'm all for safer riding for EVERYONE, and can't really see how more people carrying guns during recreational activities makes it safer.

maybe not on your back...up on a hill protecting cyclist...one or 2 taken down trying to bike jack cyclists ...word would get around quickly...and they would think twice before taking on a cyclist.

Always a smart idea discussing this kind of stuff on a public forum.
