[Event] Karoo To Coast

Doing my first K2C this year.

Logistics and accommodation seem to be a pain.

Is it possible to drive from Plett to Uniondale very early (few hours before the race starts) on race day?

Theoretically, yes you can. BUT it is going to take a moese long time, no matter which way you take.

1. Over the pass is out.

2. Via Knysna and George

3. Via Tsitsikamma / Kareedouw / Joubertina / Misgund / Uniondale

Both options available will mean a VERY early morning for all involved, both riders and drivers.

Another thing.

Last year at registration a couple guys rocked up fresh from driving all the way from Cape Town, all ready to do this thing.

I saw something looking a bit off on his car, and as the driver came around the back he noticed it too, to his extreme annoyance. He had his bike on the back bike rack, with his brand new tyre right in front of the super-hatch car's exhaust...melted to pieces.

Uniondale has no cycling shops, and the nearest ones are Knysna / Plett / George / Oudtshoorn...all which will be closed on a Saturday afternoon.

If you are going to need spares, bring your own. I am not sure if the poor bloke got to do the ride, he looked pretty defeated when I left.

Not seem to be - is a pain!

Maybe that is part of the appeal of the race - it's a big enough challenge just to get to the start!  Maybe logistics are easier if you organise as part of a group but that brings its own challenges.

Would have been nice if they had a shuttle service for your car from the start to the finish like they have for the Attakwas.

The race starts at 07:30 , plenty time to get from Knysna  ( where we are staying) to Uniondale.

Unless there are stop/go problems!

For me it is a pleasure, I have honestly never had a pain with K2C - except for the travel costs involved. I'll do my 10 and then quit.

I've said it before. Mango from Durban to Jo'burg to George and back is R1200 for the bike alone.(No direct flights with the low cost airlines. Airlink is even worse direct)).  Then there is the small expense of air-tickets for the the wife and I, car-hire, Friday night accom for two in George. Sat in Uniondale. Sunday in Knysna. Small fortune... and I haven't even bought a beer yet. The quick dash to the coffee Roastery in Mosselbay Saturday morning is just a non-negotiable must-do expense as well. Off course, it is a self-catering weekend which has its own surprises when shopping elsewhere. Which is be a revelation at best. This will be my second.  Thinking of pulling the plug on either 94.7 or Tour of Stellenbosch this year. One must go. Hell no. It is getting out of hand.

I have done the same calculation recently and decided to cut cost. For example doing the (now defunct) TransKaroo was a little over one tank of fuel since it's 680km of travel. The Cederberg 100miler is just 520km of travel so one tank does the trick.

Karoo to Coast is 1250km of travel which comes down to filling up about 3 times. Then there is the accommodation which currently is two night before K2C and one after. I have to do it like that because our 4 year old goes with and she gets really moody if you put her in a car for long trips every day.

In future, for my final 4 K2C rides I'll only stay over the night before and then come home after the ride on Sunday. I normally finish between 12 and 1 so there will be enough time to drive back home.

Once I get my 10 finishes medal I'll just think back fondly of all the memories.

Luckily, I normally have no accomodation issues, as my dad has a farm 45km or so from Uniondale. Unfortunately, I had a bad fall (on my official first training ride for K2C... :cursing: ), which has sidelined me for the year.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay on a farm in Willowmore last year. Stunning area with Aasvoelberg in the distance. Not to speak of that Lamb-rib we had over the fire the night after the race. Butchery in Willowmore only stock the genuine Karoo Lamb. Lucky you for being able to be boast about a farm in the area. Hope the injuries are not too bad and you heal soon. Bummer.

Good for you, for a lot of other people extra travelling costs and organising drivers & transfers equals some pain.

Given that the event is sold out year after year it seems the event is worth the hassle though.

Thanks, Cadre. Injuries are broken wrists x 2, of which one is shattered. Healing is going along really well, but I will not be permitted to ride in time for the race. bummer indeed.

As for the Karoo Lamb, that sounds about right. And the folks in that part of the world are genuine salt of the earth types. Real good folks that stay out that way.

Enjoy the ride, and the experience. It truly is lekker.
