This event was superb, from a rider's perspective, the pampering was 11/10.

Route:

Day one is enjoyable. There has been little to no rain on sections of the route, the trail builders have been  building anti-erosion mounds (speed bumps as they are referred to) that makes getting any sort of rhythm going down near impossible.

This made descent down the escarpment was made very interesting I spent a lot more time on my front wheel then I would have liked, but this is mainly due to my front suspension choice (or lack thereof)

I Enjoyed the last third of day one a lot more than the first part, mainly because the field has spread a little, and one could have a bit of space to build up some speed into garden of eden etc etc.

Day 2 was simply the best riding out of the 3. Mikes and then Puffadder pass, simply WOW.

Once again, it's dry, and loose, with some ninja rocks waiting to bite under inflated weighted tires.

Day 3, real nice riding, Spieonkop was fun, gets the heartrate going nicely. and the waterpoint at the top, had brannas and coke for the pain, and a whole bunch of lekker snacks.

Then the singletrack down from spioenkop, was superb, one is torn between going fast, and admiring the view (both potentially catastrophic)

All in all, I rate this event way up there, not oversubscribed, just enough of everything and free beer..can life get any better?

+++++ 1I was forced to slow down by my not so fast partner and made this the best 3 day,s of MTB .We had perfect weather and by reducing my ave speed i got to enjoy all of it .The seeding worked so well that we were very seldom held up or pushed from behind .Rarely have i ridden trails where you can leave your brakes even at speed and let the trail slow you down because of the excellent trail flow .Logistics and catering were also top notch

Great, so for the last 4 years we have had extreme weather on at least one of the days and the one time I can't make it you have perfect weather.  I want to cry....

Just finished the 2016 Great Trek. Wow, what a well organised event. Absolutely epic (no pun intended) trails. Such an awesome and chilled crowd as well on the Great Trek. I can really recommend the experience to anyone...

Do you guys think you could fit 2 x stretchers in those tents?

there are already mattresses in the tents. pretty comfy.

Also just rode the Great Trek ...

What an awesome event .

Besides the wind and heat on day 1 it was perfect .

Some of the best MTB rides available .

Where else can you do the following ....

MTB for 3 days ,

drink FREE beer , eat FREE biltong and popcorn and indulge in more chocolate milk than is ever necessary .... absolute treat .

What an awesome event! I enjoyed day 3 the most, the last 10 or so km of singletrack I had an absolute blast. Had no one in front of me so I could just let the brakes go...

I see other riders found the going a bit tough. For me it wasn't really technical at all. Yes there are lots of places where you can wipe out badly if you make a mistake, but there was nothing that made me go oooo shite like some technical sections do.

To the folk who crashed at the finish line on day 3, thanks for the entertainment! Luckily no one got hurt and everyone had a laugh

That happened last year.. right at the finish on day 1 a lady waved at someone but the rider in front of her stopped and she went OTB.

This year there were 2 crashes. First one guy on his own, don't know what he did but he wiped out badly and just lay there for a while!

Second crash was a whole group of riders. A lady (I think) and the rider next to her wanted to hold hands crossing the line.. Caused 3 of them to crash! Was very funny (they got up immediately and laughed too!)

My bum was quite sore after 3 days. Was saying to my partner, imagine if we were on hardtails! Can't imagine what it'd be like on a rigid ss! Your hubby is hardcore!
