Best way to sell 2nd hand bikes

Hi all,

My wife and I are looking to sell our mountain bikes which have not been used in +- 1 year. Both bikes have only been used roughly +- 20 times each, but obviously need a service since they haven't been used in the last year.

Both of us are inexperienced in all things MTB related and don't really know how best to go about selling them.

Would it be best to take them to a shop that can do the service and sell them for us? In which case does the store buy them from us and then resell them,...or does the store wait until they have found buyers and then take a percentage of the sale.

Alternatively is it better to just get them serviced somewhere and then advertise them online myself in the classifieds? My concerns about doing it this way are:

- if the buyer has a lot of technical questions we will not be knowledgeable enough to answer. (they're both entry level bikes, initially around R6.5k each,...so I guess not many technical questions would apply?)

- how do we go about proving to the buyer that we just had the bikes serviced?

- Im not sure how much they should be sold for. Perhaps the store that services them can advise?

If it would be best to just hand them over to a store to handle both the service and sale,...does anyone have any suggestions on where to go. (Im in the Pretoria East area but could probably do a weekend trip to JHB if necessary)

Many thanks.

Post pretty much exactly the info you posted above with some detailed pictures in the classifieds. Fairly big market for "entry level" bikes so I'm sure you'll get some offers on them (take the offer that seems reasonable to you - you'll get a feel for what is reasonable quite quickly).

If you post the details here and ask what they're worth you'll get every suggestion from donating them to charity as they're not worth anything to them being worth what you paid. Somewhere in the middle is a price both you and a buyer will be happy with.

Don't pay for a service unless you really want to - a lot of buyers will do it themselves at a quarter of the price.

Don't service them. If you paid 6.5k each, clean them, put them in the classifieds at 3.5k each as is, and accept the first +2.5k offer that walks through your door holding notes.

I sold my mountain bike to Upshift Cycles (another member on Bikehub). Yes, I lost a fair bit of cash as he is a reseller, but as a single lady it was a lower risk route to sell to a known entity with a good reputation of clean payments etc.

Good luck with the sale.

Thanks for the suggestions,

I had a feeling not servicing them was the way to go since the buyer would probably want to do it themself,...just needed to check.

The bikes are:

- GT All Terra 1.0

- GT Avalanche 1.0

I think i'll just go ahead and clean them, then post them here in the classifieds with as much detail as possible.

Give them a good clean and go for a test ride, you might keep them.

A said before, it's not worth getting it serviced as most people have 'their guys' and they trust them. Often what a std service means is very different between folk.

Put the bikes up and know what you'll take as there are a lot of tyre kickers out there looking to offer stupid amounts and resellers who some are great guys and some again are just trying to get a bargain.

BE prepared to take a hit though as bikes that have been bought about that price point do tumble like fat kid down a hill when going second hand.
