Depends on the derailleur.

Precisely, I did no 'hacking' on my X9 as per the pictures and it works an absolute treat! It would seem then it is RD dependent and perhaps even frame design specific?

I would also say frame specific.

I'm going to have to change my wheel dishing slightly, as the der is touching the spokes at times.

Check the derailer hanger first or even the derailer itself.

Did the clutch RD solve your problem because i got exact same problem with an X9 non-clutch long cage RD

To a large extend. Still struggling to dial it in 100%. I either have rubbing lower in the range when the top is dialed in, or higher in the range when the lower is dialed in. Shifting is good, though.

Nothing major, I'm just anal about that kind of thing, hate rubbing, creaking or clicking noises on my bike.

I don't have rubbing but there is still one spot where the shifting 'up' is not that 'crisp' and now and then needs a little help (think it's about 9 or 10) learnt to live with it

I have done just over 600k's now in 2 months but keep in mind for 3 weeks I couldn't ride it because of my fork issues I had.

Starting to now think it may be a problem with my derailer. On the inside of the hanger bolt there is a circlip that keeps on coming loose on mine. (the round part on the bottom left of the picture)

The shifting then becomes a bit sloppy. It is fairly loose fitting, whereas the one on my X9 derailer is on so tight I cannot get it of, as I wanted to swop these parts around.

Going to try and glue this circlip in place.

I have opened my XO shifter and stripped it, my gear selecter appears to be rivetted to the plastic bit that holds the spring, etc. Anybody else have this and should I drill out the rivets?

Yes my XO shifter was the same I just drilled out the rivets and fitted the new selector.

Do you have to rivet the new one on, how else does it engage?

You can simply use a small self taping screw to help locate and retain the ratchet while reassembling the shifter.

This is not necessary as the plastic part has lugs which fit quite snugly into the cutouts of the gear selector.
