1x11 or not

you won't be able to get a single without missing on either granny or top end, unless you get the Eagle 10-50 cassette or e-13 9-44 cassette.

As soon as you dip below 38t you lose on the top end, because the highest gear is still an 11t. So you need to decide what you favour - ease of climbing or top end speed - and plan accordingly.

To have the same climbing gear as the 24-36 you'd need a 30t at the front. Which would mean you'd lose 21% from your top end.

At 38t you keep the top end but lose 18.7% from your climbing. It'll always be a compromise.

Thank you, much appreciated

Hi,

can someone please save me me the trouble of working out what chain ring i'll need.

I currently run a Shimano 11/36 with 38/24 chain rings on a 27,5 and will be moving to a 29er which has a Shimano 11/46 cassette. Which single chain ring should I match it with, without losing gears.

Thanks.

You will loose gears. With a 30 you will have +- the same granny but you will loose 1 top end gear. If your granny is important go for 30 or if you want a better top end rather go for 32

Noob here.

I want to convert to a 1 x11 setup on my Reign 2 (2 x 10 setup)

I have the following :

Shimano 11x36, 10speed cassette, SLX rear derailleur and a 22/36 Deore crankset.

What do I need to convert to 1 x 11? New crank, derailleur, shifter & cassette? And at what cost am I looking at converting?

Thanks.

You'll need: Shifter, cassette, chain, rear derailleur, and a N/W chainring(possibly with spacers to get your chainline right)

Cost: 3-3.5K

Why not start by going 1×10.

Check if you dig the 1x tbing.

If you do, then you can do the investment later.

What KV said. If you go with SLX level kit you'll get away with spending the least amount of cash, but for the cassette I'd STRONGLY recommend the Sunrace cassette as the gear spacing is ever so slightly better and they're a bit cheaper to boot. Chainring can be of your choice, but I recommend CSixx / Kalbo / Rapide. Kalbo & Rapide for cost, CSixx & Kalbo cos they're locally manufactured.

You do NOT need a new crank. I'm running a 2x10 SLX crank with a 1x11 GX (rd & shifter) XT (cassette) KMC (chain) & Kalbo (chainring) mix.

After going back to 2x10 for a while last year I am very happy to be back on 1x10 for the past year. There is no reason to still have a front derailleur in this day and age.

Basically what Miles and KV said. Keep an eye on the classifieds as there are alot of 1x11 GX group sets coming up with very little use as people rush for GX 12sp Eagle.

eg: https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/258695-gx-1x-11-group-set-without-crank/

I've seen them here for as low as R1600 (without cranks).

Sunrace cassettes are great and you can even get up to 50T on them now. I've got a 11 - 46 mixed with a 30T up front and it'll nail anything. Cost R1200. You can get some SLX cassettes (11- 42) on special as low as R800.

Don't worry about getting a new crank unless you really want to and just replace the front ring with a 1x NW. Lyne are Cape Town based and are excellent. If you want to spend a some extra cash then one of their cranksets are great value @ R1600 (and you get the ring as well). CWC has some SLX cranks on special @ R1600 with a 32T.

Basically it does cost more than you think when you've finished getting it all together and fitted and you have to ask is it worth it over getting a whole group set and selling off your other bits to help fund the  upgrade. Even going 1 x 10 costs because you'll need a new cassette with a wider range to get the best out of it (R1000 - R1800) as well as a 1 x front ring (R340+).

You can get a new, full 1 x SLX drive train from Lord Gun for about R4800 and that comes with 1x drivetrain, brakes, cranks, BB etc.

In agreement with KV, Miles & HC.

I tried 1x10 for a while and it was a waste of money. After going to 1x11 I'll never have a multiple chainring setup.

Used the 11-46t cassette from Sunrace on 2 bikes now, and both 34t oval chainrings, the one a Kalbo and the other a cSixx (DM). Rear Derailleurs are NX and GX, both with GX shifters.

Consider going for a conversion kit, and if possible keep your crank, I do not think it is necessary to change it out. The Kalbo chainrings are great value for money. Alternative if you feel the need for a new crank, then go with the Lyne crank from the guys in CT.

Sunrace have really upped the game. I love how we now have affordable and quality alternatives from China. I'm have miles of no hassles with my Sunrace cassette, Taya chain and Chaoyang tyres. My dad is considering to go 1x9 and there are some nice Sunrace NW chainrings and 11t-40t cassettes on eBay.

*R1600

Have you got any experience dealing with Lord Gun?

*R1599.00 ;)

I've used them before to get some stems and a SLX groupset for my bother in law as the prices were very good.  Had them shipped to the UK though, haven't shipped them down this way so don't know what their costs for that are like.

And locally for R1500. It's the 50 that interests me and the ability to play with a slightly bigger front ring. Not sure I'm too bothered bout that extra cog going 11 to 12.

Just over a grand before VAT & shipping from Bike Discount. So R 1,350 or so landed.
