Does the same apply to the open seeded groups? In other words, would a short rider be allowed to hook onto an open seeded long group? I know that the rules should (in theory) be better enforced in the racing groups, but I would imagine that a short rider would also gain an "unfair" advantage by using an open / seeded group to improve his/her time?

From what I read out of it , Absolutely Not... In order for a lower rider to improve his times, he simply has to take the long way to the top.. If he starts in a group where no one is willing to work together, he should either (be strong enough to) solo it, or wait for the next race hoping he can get a bunch together (which started in his group) that will work together to improve their times.

So, can some of your more experienced guys who raced this and the Argus help me out a bit.

What sort of time can expect on the CTCT with a time of 3h14 yesterday, considering the conditions.

I'm aiming for Sub 3 and understand that the conditions has to be in my favour for this.

My previous best was 3h10 in 2012, but then I was 13kg heavier than now und not as close as fit.

Are my expectations realistic? I'm starting in 1D

That "cat and mouse" IS racing :)

Like I said I have no problem with their race tactics BUT on yesterdays ride it just created problems after they slowed the pace down to 20-25km/h because you have the AL group trying to still get a decent time, you have the ladies trying to fight it out for 1st,2nd and 3rd place (They stayed out of the VC bunch) and because they slowed the pace so much you have the short distance riders joining in and even trying to pass the whole group. Now imagine the bunch of 6 VC riders togeter with the 3 leading ladies and a bunch of AL riders going around the bend into the finish and sprinting in between short distance riders. VC Should have kept the pace up a bit longer to create a gap between them and ladies at least. I saw what was coming and sat up in those last kilometers

Maybe a slightly earlier start for the licenced groups should be considered to sort out the problems with short distance riders mixing with the licenced groups?

I was also surprised that VC started behind us. It doesn't makes sense.

AL is usually faster than VC but because we dropped they caught our little group.

I actually thought they were going to get DQ at one stage when they were riding in the right hand lane. The race official hooted at them a few times especially when there were cars coming from behind. The one guy at one stage lost his cool and showed her (in a irritated manner) that she must pass the group.........i don't think he recognized that it was a race official

Well lets cut to the chase here, the winner of VC would have come 39th/129 in AL, so if they started behind AL and still caught you.... pedal faster :P

I know- but is it necessary to rub in (lol)

LOL. We were chasing the whole day

If you are not chasing you are not racing. Patch is right.

Well when you guys caught me and I was in the middle of nowhere

Alfa was there for a while, not exactly sure when we fell off

But those tandems got grumpy when I told them to race their own race

And even in our group not everyone was rotating I reckon we were 6 to 8 rolling through consistantly

9 times out 10 the organiser's and officials don't understand racing tactics, fun-riders and the mix of the two, and go with the standard start order prescribed by the race officials.

On all the occasions that I have done both in the same year, my Argus time was very close to my R4S time.

Should I have attempted the Argus this year, I am confident I would have hacked a 2:50 (if the VA group was in fast mode as per usual)

My time yesterday was around 3h.

1D start group should get you a fast group that will be willing to work hard in front for the Sub3.

Good luck!

Agreed. I for one was not contributing for the first bit, no problem in admitting that.

For 3 reasons. 1) I had just ridden across to the chase bunch up that long ass drag and was tired. 2) When I was trying to close the guys down who had guttered us, nobody was willing to pull and I blew in a big way, both my legs and verbally (you suffered the same and I think you saw my anger as those idiots didnt want to help in the echelon) so I wasnt in a sharing mood. 3) I saw no point in chasing a break that I thought was 5mins up the road. I think you then said they were only 1m30 up the road (not sure how you found that out) but then it made sense to help chase again and I did.

If we had been given time splits, it would have been a way different race, as the entire group would have had a motive to chase them down. But not knowing how far up the road they were, and knowing they were only 6-7 guys, a good sprint in our bunch meant a top 10, which is motive enough for some to hold back.

When my legs came back and I thought there was a chance we could get them, the tandems where there and they distrupted the the paceline massively. Everytime we wanted to pull into the left as the paceline moved forward a tandem took the place of the rider who was rotating. When I asked the dude how he thought we were supposed to rotate when he kept doing that, I just got a blank look.

Must say, big up to the two guys in Concept kit (I think) who put in two huge efforts after the left turn back towards Boksburg, that was some good pace up there for long.

I didn't know the time gap but I knew they were a small group

IF you look on flybys i think we were just 20 secs off them just before the big left turn pas carnival, so close. But yes time gaps would have helped a lot.

I know how you feel was basically in the red all the way from that 47km mark

really paid my dues from trying to join those 2 early breakaways
