Bro, do you even stretch?

When (which is not often) I go running, I do the same.

The last I heard is that, for rugby and cricket, a lot of activation is required, and a few static ones as well. So with the kids I do a combination of these, as well as warm-up (easy jogs, sprints).

But it seems that the consensus is "NOPE" for riding?

there is also a school of thought that says no for running..as running relies on your fascia bands to act as springs and propel you....they therefore shouldn't be stretched...but I am not convinced about this theory

I wonder how many pulled a hammie or strained their back trying to touch their toes now

Normally if I stretch my hamstrings I use a short towel around my foot and hold on both ends pulling on the towel trying to keep my back straight.... Find this works well without placing strain on my back or anywhere else

I've got long legs so touching my toes is difficult

yoga does wonders for this...I can usually put flat hands down on the dirt. BUT....most common mistake for toe touches for the purpose of stretching hamstrings is that you MUST also lift your arse up when you doing it as this is the mechanism that actually stretches your hamstring...try it next time...or do it now in the office while everyone looks at you strangely  :P

The first test at my biokineticist (about 15 years ago) found that I was about 10cm off touching toes - seated on the floor. After she stretched me to breaking point over the next 4 weeks I could push 30cm past my toes.

And that helped you with?

And that helped you with?

Being able to race my bike in licensed vets for one. Able to walk straight up after riding. Extra power on the bike

Due to shortened hamstrings, tight butt muscles and other muscle imbalances the whole lower spine, pelvis skeletal system gets pulled out of alignment. It's a constant battle.

Short hamstrings also put more strain on the ligament as it moves past the knee, this can result in some serious pain when running.

And pulls feet outward - one of the causes of duck feet.

I have to stretch. If I don't I'm fubar for days. That comes from having a back op at 16 with lots of nerve damage and muscle imbalances.

Sometimes stretch sessions are longer than the ride itself. I have a routine which I can almost do in my sleep by now. It's not really fun but my body feels so much better.

Cycling really shortens the hamstrings. I wonder how many of you can even touch your toes

Some of us can barely see our toes...

home office for me at the moment.....LOL

At my stage in life I will rather wait until the wife gets home just in case I get stuck...

Have tried it before but find it difficult to focus on the hamstring as it also engages the calves and Achilles..... Although I might have been doing it wrong

I stretch all day, every day...usually because I can't sit still. Am quite loose although it does take me a while to warm up* on a bike...

*Not that I go particularly fast, but anyway...

From the beginning I rode with some hard dogs and semi pros, never did they stretch or talk about it, so I thought its another one of those weird cyclist things... 3 years later I went to the pshysio for back problems and she laughed at how unsupple(?) I was. She actually used a photo of me stretching for my toes at some conference as a bad example haha. So after that I stretched, realised its boring as hell. Ditched it. Now I just try to do some quick ones in the shower afterwards

So that's why I don't like running...
