Hi all,

I need some advice please…

I’m looking to buy a dual suspension bike for cross country riding and narrowed it down to 2 bikes:

Scott Spark 940 or

Giant Anthem X

The higher spec XT components and remote lockout on Scott is attractive, but Giant track record and local support can’t be ignored.

Any suggestion?

If you buy new the Giant has a great lifetime warranty. I'm not sure about the Scott. They both good bikes . You should ride both before you buy.

First off, welcome to the Bikehub Andre.

Secondly, if you trawl some of the TONS of posts on this forum from people asking this EXACT same question, you will find that the Anthem is by far the overwhelming favorite.

By far.

Some say that Giant is all anyone needs in life really. That and a six pack in the fridge. But I am slightly biased. About beer that is.

Here is some interesting reading for you to kick off your frenzied hunt;

Scott, in my opinion - both good (had both by the way) but the scott has a better spec and the twinloc is a great feature! Scott backup is good, so no need for concern. Seems Like theres an issue with the Anthem frames cracking, but apparently that has been sorted out with the 2016 models? Ride both if possible - but, imho the Scott is a better bike!

Very little difference between the two - lot's of votes on both sides...

Best advice: Buy the bike that when you see it, makes you want to go and ride it. Best bike ever.

I bought a Giant Anthem X in 2014, then I had a 2015 frame due to the 2014 one snapping and now I have the 2016 frame due to a crack in the 2015 one

The support was awesome had a new frame within a week every time

The 2016 frame looks like it has been improved a lot and I don't think this frame will crack/snap at the seat post...

I just think Scott's rear suspension sits in a better/cleaner place, my dad almost never washes his Scott and it never squeak... with my Anthem I have to wash and remove dust from the suspension links with a cloth and sometimes it still squeaks... maybe its just me...

If this one cracks on another one of rides on the Spruit, I suspect it's you generaal Gert ????

I'm on the 2013 Anthem and it's still a great ride. Been doing systematic components upgrades as the frame has so much life in it

Im expecting a post about a cracked rear triangle at some stage.

The scotts were known for that if they weren't very well maintained.

I took the anthem...the reason...I couldn't justify the price difference (R9000) paid R26000 for the anthem 2015 model which included a kashiwa shock...tubeless conversion...the grips I wanted and trail pedals...

On the road it feels like a marshmallow even with the suspension in lock out...the bike is designed for the bush not the road...on the gravel and single tracks...what a beauty.

Can't comment about the Scott...never ridden one.

It is a lot of money to spend on a bicycle...I would test ride both and make a decision on which feels better...and within your budget

A note...when taking the bicycle finance option just be aware that you loose out on the discount...and you have finance charges...if you use your budget facility...a personal loan (check interest rate) or pay cash...the discount is worth a few bob and you can negotiate other things.

Ride both.  You have to ride both.

I've ridden them, and I'm a bit quicker on the Scott on the same terrain, but the Anthem is way more forgiving and more comfortable.  The Scott feels a lot more focused and is much twitchier in the loose stuff.

The Anthem doesn't have a lockout because it doesn't need it.  The Scott bobs all over the place when it's not locked out.

They're both good bikes and I'd be happy with either, but I'd lean more towards the Anthem.  Especially if you're buying new.  You can't beat a lifetime frame warranty.
