Can someone explain what the rider's were doing wrong there? This is my take on the series of events. No I don't know if they were allowed to ride on that road, No I don't know rules of the road in whichever country they are in.

1. this is an clearly international video where clearly they drive on the right hand side of the road - Rule of the road here would be keep right pass left.

2. the riders were approaching a "turnoff" to the right, and wanting to go straight they cycle on the left hand side of the turning only lane (this seems pretty natural otherwise you would have to cross the lane at the last minute.

3. the entire lane on their right turns off making the cyclists the rightmost traffic. This is quite clearly shown by the painted island which the riders are about 30cm from.

4. a new "right lane" opens up after the turnoff.

5. Cyclist indicates that they are moving right. we don't know if the back rider has shouted "clear" or not at this stage, but I think it is reasonable for one to expect that with a lane that is busy opening up and is not yet 1 meter wide, that there should not be any vehicular traffic in the lane at that stage.

6. cyclist begins moving into the still-opening lane

7. BOOM... truck.

does it matter...

saw such a **** on Otto du Plessis into CT this morning down the middle of the traffic with the dedicated, safe, separated from traffic cycle lane only 20m to his right.

Where exactly was this?

For the rider in the video, no.

For me, Yes. Because everybody (thread title and all the posts before mine) said he was riding like a ****. From the short clip we see, on that part of the road, I would probably have done the exact same thing. We are short on information so I am not certain I would have been there in the first place.... but on that road, what should the riders have done differently.

I know it's Friday and all, but this is a genuine question from my side to the forum, and is asked in the interest of increasing my own safety while riding, as well as anyone else who may read this. What could/should the riders have done differently.

Please don't come back with a "they shouldn't have been there" answer, that doesn't help. There are plenty of similar scenarios on many of our own cycle routes.

I'm referring to where he is riding....what happened was inevitable.

True - but assuming he was allowed to be on that stretch of road, then the truck's consideration of other users is non existant - given that I am not familiar with the local road code, crossing a solid line may not be an offence...

Still - I would also not ride on that road - a rear facing camera's footage would be useful to see what really happened.

This. Exactly this.

We also do not know what the truck was doing behind the camera. Was he trying to avoid something else? Was he late changing lanes to make the split?

You won't find me on that road on a bike  :nuke:
